Texas Carry Laws

I am a Virginia resident with a carry permit. I am thinking about a move back to Texas. How difficult is to get a Texas carry permit?

Relatively easy, but difficult if you compare it to some other states. Virginia has open carry without a permit, Texas does not. To get a CHL in Texas you must take a class, about 12 hours, which includes the laws for the use of deadly force in Texas (you are going to love that part) and a section on conflict resolution. You must also shoot a 50 round qualifier at various ranges out to 15 yards, qualifying score is 70% or higher. If you shoot an auto it must be 9mm or larger, a revolver must be .38 special or larger. If you qualify with an auto you may carry anything, if you use a revolver you may only carry a revolver. You must submit the application to DPS with two passport photos and fingerprints. Class runs about $100 including photos, prints, range time, and target. You provide gun and ammo. Permit cost is $140 and is valid for 4 years. The CHL is ONLY valid for a handgun and does allow you to bypass the federal NICS check on firearms purchases.

One minor correction, Jeff, is that you can now shoot the CHL course with .32 and above for both revolver and auto. This was passed in the last session.

I thought that most states that issued concealed carry had a crossover...you have a permit in one so you can carry in the other? I know Tx, Fl and AZ do it.

Can't use my Makarov for my test huh?

medic....gotta live here 6 months first I think.........shoot 50 rounds at 3,7 and 15 yards. You have to jump through the hoops but even if you dont "carry" most of the time you can keep it in the vehicle. worth the effort even if we are paying for "privilege" of doing something that is a "right" if you know what I mean.

Texas *DECLINED* reciprocity with Florida. I have family living in Florida so I applied for and am waiting for a Florida non-resident CWP.

My Texas CHL is honored by reciprocal agreement in Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Arizona. The Florida CWP is also honored in Missisippi so hopefully on my next trip from Texas to Florida the only portion not covered by a liscense will be 54 miles of "lock it in the trunk unloaded" Alabama.

Rick, yes, BUT your state of residence must not be able to issue permits. If you live in NM or Kansas you would be eligible for a non-resident Texas CHL, but not if you live in Ca. because there has been a carry permit issued in Ca. Even Hawaii has issued a permit before. In those cases you are not eligible in Texas.
