Texas boy shot for using sign language

Updated 6:20 PM ET June 13, 2000

FORT WORTH, Texas (Reuters) - A boy using sign language while walking down a street with his deaf cousin was shot and wounded in Fort Worth by suspected gang members who may have thought his hand motions were rival gang signals, police said Tuesday.

Henry Handy III, 16, was in fair condition at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth after being shot once in the chest Saturday night. The case was made public Tuesday.

Police said Handy was walking down the street practicing sign language with his 15-year-old cousin when a car passed and a backseat passenger fired at the boy.

The gunman, who got out of the car and threatened to kill the deaf youth, was dressed in the colors of a local gang.

The hearing-impaired cousin told police he believed the gunman had mistaken their conversation for gang signals.

"We've never heard of anything like this. Right now our gang unit is investigating, but we have no named suspects," police spokesman Lt David Burgess said.

There is no evidence that Handy or his cousin were gang members, he said.

This is probably one of the "children" HCI and the Klinton Administration talk about. The poor child (gunman) probably had his self esteem challenged by the signing youth.

Same thing happened to a black kid in Minneapolis about 5 years ago. Gang bangers got on the bus and saw him doing Sign. IIRC, they cut him with a knife, and he lost sight in one eye. It's just sickening.

Placerville. CA (before Kalifornia became the PRK), during the gold rush, was known as "Hangtown." A notice was posted that bad-guys were persona non grata. The local citizenry handled these kind of issues themselves.

The politicians walk a fine line between voter/citizen outrage and coddling the "under privileged."

I knew of a former co worker from long ago who had the opposite happen (though no assaults). She was with some friends at a McDonalds and they were 'supplementing' their vocal speech with hand speech (read: they were doing the hand jive thing). Apparently, there were some deaf persons in the restaurant that saw their behaviors and thought that they were making fun of their sign language speech. One of the deaf persons confronted the kids (they were high school age) and demanded to know why they were making fun of them!

Since the cops seem pretty unwilling to do anything most of the time, I submit that a citizen's defense force is well in order.

A little "frontier justice", if you will.

No more living in fear. Murderous thugs like this ought to be hunted down and exterminated like the vermin they are.

I heard something a while back about some kids getting shot at while wearing their 4-H t-shirts. It seems that the four-leaf clover is the symbol of one of the Chicago gangs.

Teen Fabricated Story

The Associated Press

FORT WORTH, Texas –– A teen-ager who claimed he was shot by gang members who mistook a sign language exchange with his hearing-impaired cousin for provocative gang signals now says his cousin accidentally shot him.

"They fabricated the whole story," Lt. David Burgess said of the June 10 incident in which Henry Lee Handy III was shot in the chest.

Handy, 16, recanted Friday when confronted by officers at John Peter Smith Hospital, telling police instead that his cousin had accidentally shot him. He is reported in fair condition.

Handy's cousin, Ruben Faulkwell, 15, was taken into custody Friday afternoon on a juvenile charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

"I was very scared," Faulkwell said about an hour before he was taken to the juvenile center. "I didn't want to go to jail. I love my family and my cousin."
