Tennessee Wild Boar

I'm thinking of hunting wild boar in TN this spring. Is a Marlin 1894 chambered for .44 mag enough cartridge?

And at what distances are these pigs harvested? Would I need to scope this rifle? Any help would be appreciated. I am new to this forum.

thanks

Plenty of power for a hog.

Hogs are killed at all ranges. I shot one a few weeks ago at about 125 yards, and have heard of 'em being taken within 20 feet as well. I'd see how accurate you are with your iron sights, and base your scope on that.

I assume you are going to hunt with a guide or outfitter, so I would ask them for their opinion on the kinds of shots that are common and whether or not the 44 mag is enough. I think it is enough as I would hunt them with a 41 mag revolver and feel okay about it.

shot placement is critical of course. I was on the A.T. in the Smokeys back in early '70's (before the Ntnl Trail Systems Act - I was just back from 'Nam) and saw 2 wild black boar one morning. a sow (sort of brownish) about 175-200 lbs and a real mean-looking black boar complete w/glowing red eyes about 300 maybe more. sort of 'glared' at me. I was in a trail shelter I had spent the night in. when I first got there I passed a wallow just outside the shelter - could not believe my eyes.
I wouldn't feel comfortable with anything less than a semi-auto hi-power rifle or maybe a SXS shotty or semi after seeing that.

took this one last weekend with a .30-30 handload.

the ugly guy in the photo is my father in law LOL

The .44Mag, in a rifle with the proper bullet, is plenty enough for anything on the North American continent. Except the big bears. It has successfully taken the Big 5 in Africa without the added benefit of a buttstock or an additional 400fps.

Got anoter one last night here re some pics before we butcherd him at my brother-in-laws place. this one was a brain shot head on at 50 yds.
