tenifer?

Gunners,

Am seriously thinking of getting a Bersa 9UC in matte.

I understand it is tenifer coated.

My questions are:

How much better than blueing is tenifer?

Can tenifer rust?

How maintenance-conscious should an owner be with tenifer?

How does it stack up against stainless as far as durability? Nickel?

Tenifer, Melonite, Nu-Tuff, etc, have been around for a while. They seem to offer great scuff resistance (makes sense since it is a type of case hardening), good corrosion resistance (probably as good as nickel). I do not believe tenifer itself will rust, but it is very thin so you may have some rusting in worn areas. Bluing offers very little resistance to rust since it is in fact a type of iron oxide.

Extremely durable !! Wear and rust resistant to a great degree. Glock pistols are a good example - the gun is case hardened then there is an additional treatment which makes it very rust resistant .

I see nothing on the Bersa website that says their guns are Tenifer treated.

If they are...
Tenifer is carbo-nitriding, a modern form of case hardening that makes the surface of the steel wear and corrosion resistant. The black finish is applied separately* and has nothing to do with wear and little to do with rust resistance. The finish can be worn to expose bare steel and there is still little risk of damage if any care at all is taken.

*In most cases, I think there is one version of the process that blackens the metal in the last step.
