Ten yard coyote!

Today I went out to do a little coyote calling and take a break from the job search deal because it's driving me insane.

I drove up to the coulees and walked in a way to a place where I've seen them before. I sat down and gave a few hoots on my rodent coaxer call in case something was in close and waited a few minutes. Once I decided nothing was close enough to hear I started with the jackrabbit call.

Halfway through my second round of calls with that call and looking way out down the valley a pair of ears caught my attention and those ears were very close.

I dropped the call and cranked my scope to 3X and there was a big old coyote maybe 15 yards down the hill. He kind of jumped up onto his hind legs and looked at me and then trotted into the bushes to my right and out of sight. Two squeaks on the rodent call and he was staring at me from ten yards. Needless to say I didnt miss him.

I think the reason that he didnt run away is because he was trying to tell if I would go better with teriyaki or mesquite.

"...were you wearing rabbit ears?"

Great idea! I wonder if it's too late to buy an Easter bunny suit. Who need's camo anyway?:D

Got another one today. This time about 150 yards instead of close enough to throw a rock at.

Make sure that when you go buy that bunny suit you dont get the pink easter bunny suit itll throw them for a real loop.

Good work on the call. I used to hunt coyotes with a guy who shot a 22 Win Mag, and he was magic on the calls. They would just stroll right in and look at him from about 50-75 yds out, and he was a very good shot with that rifle.

What kind of call were you using?
I know nothing about calls or calling but would like that to change.
Thanks
Tom

I have a knight and hale predator call kit that came with three reeds.

Jackrabbit
Cottontail
and Rodent

I use that with the jackrabbit reed in because we have a lot of jackrabbits in the area and the coyotes seem to know the sound very well. This is a great long range call and you can bring em in from a long way. I have seen coyotes come in from over half a mile.

My second call is a Primos Coyote and bear buster. This one I took apart and slid the little band all the way to the last slot on the end and it is my rodent squeaker.

When I get to my call locations wherever they might be I sit and wait a few minutes for everything to settle down and make sure my breath is steady then start calling.

I start with a few seconds of rodent squeaks to see if there is anything close and if not I break out the rabbit call. Call for a few seconds, wait a few minutes scanning the land scape and sitting very very still and then call again and just do that until your sick of that spot and move on if you don't see anything.

When you get a coyote in they will circle downwind to try to catch your scent. They will be swinging their head from side to side looking for the sound. When they are in close enough to shoot move very slowly to raise your gun, give a whistle or something and the coyote will stop for about two seconds. If you don't shoot then youll never see that yote again and he'll never respond to calls either. They are smart critters, never underestimate your quarry.

The best way to learn calling is to go with someone who is good at it like I did or if you dont know anyone youll have to buy a video. It's a great sport and I find it much more satisfying than deer hunting even. Although I did see a nice looking white-tail buck just starting to grow his antlers the other day and I'll be out scouting him to see how big he gets all year.

Thanks alot Jseime Im gunna look for those calls and a dvd on e-bay right now.
Ive seen alot of jackrabbits by my house , no coyote yet but alot of tracks.
I really wanna try and call one out , Ive never had any luck with calling or hunting in general.
I guess I can only improve :)

If that video is any good it will take your game to a whole new level. I watched one and paid close attention to the spots they called, the direction they faced, the type of calls, duration of calls, the whole bit and coyotes come to me every time I go out now almost.

The more you interact with yotes the more you learn about them. I notice something new every time I see one now.

I ordered two dvd's off e-bay.
I found that the coyotes right by my house arent really that scared of humans and act very different from other coyotes.
Ive been watching people calling in coyotes on u-tube for now.
Thanks again
Tom
