Telling Uberti from Pietta Conv. Cylinders?

I know somebody with a Taylor's Conversion Cylinder for an 1858 Remington New Army copy, but he doesn't have the literature that tells which model it fits.

Does anyone know how to tell, by markings only, which cylinder would be a Pietta and which would be an Uberti?

Are there letters or numbers, or other markings that reveal which one a cylinder would fit?

Thanks,

YEP on my conversion cylinder it as the stamped
letter u at the front of the cylinder u is uberti,
and p is for pietta as for other makes that i am
not sure.:D

Long Rider, just to clarify, when you say "stamped on the front" do you mean on the end with the chamber mouths or on the end where the firing pins are located?

Thanks for all the replies!

You just masure the overall length of the cylinder, Pietta is 2.016" from rear to front. Uberti is 2.000". Euroarms/ASP are 2.006" Long. Auction Arms?

My R&D cylinders are marked with the U on the Chamber face but the Pietta cylinders aren`t marked at all ...It does get confuseing haveing both ...One thing for sure the Pietta conversion won`t fit in a Uberti Remmie . I use a Uberti Conversion in my EuroArms Remmie and it works fine . Don`t know why the didn`t mark the Pietta Cylinder ..But I find no mark on mine at all .

OK, my uberti cylinder will fit my pietta and my
old a.s.m in 44 cal, one of my uberti cylinders
as a u on the ball end, and one as a u under the
firing pin plate, one pietta cylinder as a p.& t at
the ball end but it will not fit in the ubertis,
when i have done a strip down on both makes
i find the internall parts on the pietta are bigger
than the ubertis, i have filed them down to make
them fit and they work to,with a little elbow gerase
gosh i wish i had a snap snap to show some photos
just can not get the cash right now work is slow at
this time.:D

HEY POSSUM, can not tell its hard to make it out,
but check under the firing pin plate they may be a
letter on the under side of the plate.
IF you are not sure if a c/cylinder will fit your gun
send of your gun to taylers they will fit it to your
gun, thats what they told me a time ago, so i found a
gun shop what sold c/cylinders so i took my 58 with
me so i made sure of the fit, cost me a arm and a leg:eek:
but it was worth it lots of fun loading bp cases and smokless
thats COWBOY LOADS best of both worlds.;):D
