How can you guys know the date of manufacture of a S&W by the serial number, is there a web site with this info?

Some have books

Please post the first 5 digits, along with a prefix, and we'll tell you date.OH ! Model number if it has one.best.dewey

There is nothing in the serial number that really gives you a clue as to manufacture date. many of us use the "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson", by Jim Supica and Richard Nahas. If you have more than a casual interest in S&W, this reference book is a "must".

You guys use books?

I sacrifice a goat to Mithras, and one of his minions speaks from the sacred flames.

Unfortunatly, I go through a LOT of goats....

Mike has lived alone too long.:D

Put the serial number and model up and use XXX for the last three digits of the serial number. That way you are not posting the whole number on the web for some nefarious character to do you wrong with.

Any writing on the barrel would be good too.

Sam, gonna get a book someday......I hope.

I didn't know there was such a book. I like S&W's but my interest isn't academic enough to invest in a book. I just got a used mod 64 in perfect condition and wondered the manufacture date. It's my first revolver other than the .22. I'll call the number Mr. G posted tommarow. Thanks.

Gabby,

Do the opposite of what your member name suggests and HUSH!

Next thing you know I'll be pestered with people wanting to know if Mithras makes a better goat stopper than a Magsafe...
