Tell the GOP as Well

SW did a deal to save their butt.

Here is an important note. On the state level, Governors and legislators moved to protect gun companies.

The national GOP leadership that wants gunowner support did nothing!! Did you see any strong use of the bully pulpit in the house and the senate to protect the companies?

Hasset - a pale wussy is only concerned with tax cuts for the rich.

The RKBA is going to lose unless it becomes an issue that doesn't depend on the national cowards of the GOP congressional leadership to stop a Democratic president.

Note: I do not mean that the future is in
third party loons like Buchanan.

Pragmatically, we have to elect Bush.

Then, we should really think how to get the message to the middle and convince these folks
that the RKBA is important.

The rhetoric of the tinfoil brigade, the correlation of the RKBA with only conservative causes must be broken.

Drawing lines in the sand, no surrender, etc.
are tactically and strategically empty.

As the GOP starts to listen to its big business loving branch like Pataki or
wussies in Colorado - there is no future in current defensive strategies or waiting for imaginary black heliocopters.

Good point Glen. I think we have to recognize that WE are the middle. And RKBA is a middle of the spectrum issue.

The question is how? The propagandists in the media have done a great job of convincing everyone that RKBA is a far right issue. But look at the threads we've had in this forum on occupations etc. We are the middle. The thought that the millions of firearms in this country are all owned either by extremists or criminals needs to be overcome. I would venture a guess that there are more households in this nation have a firearm, then there are that don't.

Maybe it's time for us to come out of the closet. Look at the threads we have about "discreet" carry case options etc. We're letting them drive us underground.

Perhaps we could take the current furor over the census and turn that to our advantage. An educational campaign to explain what the current proposed legislation means to the person who has grandad's 30-30 in the closet and about every three or four years gets it out and takes it deer hunting. These are the gunowners we need to convince. By doing that, they will help us convince the politicians.

Glenn.
I'd really like to see the National repub's act in a pro freedom way. I'm more of a libertarian ( no - no, calm down, I'm not going there). I've heard and had the arguements, and my personal decision is for bush this year - although the Pataki thing isn't making this easy. I think the national party better realize that IF they do well this year, there had better be results. (or else I won't vote for them any more thhhbtt :p - so there) Oh well, in my more depressed moments, I really expect to be stabbed in the back by them.

The fundamental problem the Republicans have at the national level is that narrow majority, coupled with Congressional rules which require that the Congressional leadership be selected by a vote of the ENTIRE Congress, not just the members of the majority party.

If they had a large majority, they'd be fine. But that small majority means that they need the vote of every single Republican to elect the leaders. Even two or three defections, and the Democrats would take control of Congress. The most "liberal" (Read: anti-gun) Republicans have taken advantage of this, and threaten to vote with the Democrats if the leadership slate isn't to their liking. So in order to maintain nominal control of Congress, the Republicans have been picking "leaders" who the likes of Senator Chaffee approve of!

That's why I wouldn't be all that upset if the Republicans lost control of Congress. If they did, they'd be able to ignore the RINOs (Republican In Name Only) when they pick their leadership. A large minority with effective leadership can actually block bad legislation better than a narrow majority with backstabbing leaders, which is what they have now.

There's actually a Republican group, centered around the Cato institute, which is trying to defeat the Rinos in the primaries, so that the conservatives will be able to pick conservative leaders without the Democrats winding up in control. They're focused mainly on economic issues, but it might be worthwhile trying to get social issues like RKBA into the mix, too.

Checked it out; They're called the Club for Growth, www.clubforgrowth.org, and it looks REALLY good; Most of their targets have F- or F ratings from GOA! I'm starting a thread to suggest an alliance.
