Tell me about your S&W 625

What do you guys think about the 625? I've been wanting one for a while and decided to look into it again.
Other than the guns being stupid expensive, how are they? Any issues with reliability, accuracy, or moon clip angst?

With the exception of a 642 I run all Ruger revolvers at the moment. If I get one of these it would be used for punching paper and recreational use. While I'm not a competitive shooter, I like precision tools.
I could not care less about collectors value, vintage, or pretty rainbow grips. Chances are good that it would be modified to fit my large paws and have the action tweaked to give me that perfect feel. Since it would be tuned I doubt seriously that I'd pick up a Performance Center gun. To be honest, if I get one it will likely be used.

They come in 3", 4", and 5" barrel lengths.
I believe all of them are new enough to have Round Butt N Frame Grips.
I have had them in all 3 barrel lengths. No issues with any of them. The 3" ones will be the most expensive. For a range gun you will want a 4" or 5" anyway.
The 625-3 will shoot 45AR ammo also. Not sure about the newer versions. I have 250 rounds of AR brass, and I have never loaded a round of it so far.
All the moon clips I have used work fine. The cheapest source will probably be from Ranch Products. I have been using their clips forever, and they work just fine.
You will need a moon clip tool.
http://moncliptool.com/ the one they sell works just fine. I have one with Mandrels for my L Frame 38, J Frame 38, N Frame 10mm both Round and Octagon Hole, as well as my 45acp.
The 625 has a pinned on front sight so you can swap it around to a Red Ramp, Partridge, or Fiber Optic any time you want to make a change.
Everyone I have owned has been plenty accurate.
I currently have a 3" 625-3.
My brother has an fairly rare JM 625 with a 5" barrel. The very first ones were 5" before IDPA changed the rules to make 4" barrels the maximum length. His has a 2 digit serial Number. I have no idea how many of the 5" ones were made, but I have never seen one for sale.
Get a 625, You will like it.

Moonclips and percision revolver shooting? Can't see that. ICORE saved the M625. S&W revolvers and full length underlugs? Naw.

I did see an orginal 1920's .44 special S&W Model 21 4 inch in 98% for sale for apprx 2 grand. Good luck with any custom house producing fit & finish & appearance topping that.

I have a -2 in 5" that is very nice. Someone worked on the trigger so that it is picky about ammo in double action (federal primers work 100%). I like S&W revolvers and a good N-frame can't be beat.

Here's mine. A 5"er tuned for use in USPSA. After the 1st pic was taken, I bobbed the hammer even more (2nd pic).

Yes, if you're going to get it tuned, get a standard model, rather than something from S&Ws PC. In the end, you'll get a better gun anyway. Since it's the USPSA revolver, a number of 'smiths really know how to slick them up.

This was my Model 625 with my homemade walnut grips to convert it to square butt configuration. Using .45 ACP with clips got tiresome, and .45 AR didn't do anything the .45 Colt couldn't do better. Also didn't like the stainless steel gun, rather had it in blue.

As to accuracy, I think I shot one of the smallest groups I've ever fired out of this gun, but that was a pipsqueak load.

I have a 4" JM. Did the action myself. It only needed a spring kit and a new strain screw(the one it came with was too short with the Wolff main spring). I do use Federal primers, won't shoot Win. at all. I did run 10 Rem fact. 230's and they all fired. I use it for IDPA, it's the funnest revolver I own. Buy one and enjoy it. Almost forgot, I did install an C&S firing pin. I don't really know if it was needed. For a while I could not get Fed. Primers so I had to detune it where it would fire Win. All shooting done double action.

Mines a 4 inch mountain gun in 45 Colt. Couldn't be happier with it. Excellent accuracy and very smooth action.

Thanks guys.
I did a little digging around on the always truthful interwebs and found some people claiminglow accuracy standards for the stainless guns. Others had 25-2s that shot impressively tight groups.
Any feedback on that?

My 25-2 shoots groups FAR better than I am capable of. My 625 slightly less so, but still VERY good. I doubt you could tell the difference unless using a ransom rest.

Mine is a three incher. Flash chromed trigger and hammer to.

Eats .45 supers like candy. 230gr JHP at 1000 fps ain't bad.

Mine isn't a 625, but a 25-13, Mountain Gun in 45 Colt. I gotta say I like it. It looks great...shoots great. What more could I ask for?

+1 "Mines a 4 inch mountain gun in 45 Colt. Couldn't be happier with it. Excellent accuracy and very smooth action."

It is my never sell gun, I even had mine cut for moon clips so I could shoot 45acp and 45C

My JM 625-8 is a sweet gun, very accurate well balanced and I shoot mostly AR as I bought 500 brass and its easier for me to use them than moon clips. I've also got a 1917 and the 625 is in annother league than the 1917. Charlie

I have an original -2 from 1988 (year of intro). It is the most accurate S&W revo I have ever seen. One thing to be aware of, the -2 s came with S&W's "improved" floating hand which had so many documented failures that it was dropped the next year. Mine still has one and has caused no problems but I have had friends who had to replace theirs with a standard hand. But it's a cheap easy fix and they are truly amazing guns. I've killed a LOT of bowling pins with mine and I'll never sell it.

Perhaps I should clarify.
I can hold 3" groups at 25 yards with my 7.5" 454 Super Redhawk using medium Casull loads.
My Blackhawk will run tighter than that if I don't have too much caffeine in the morning.
My big Vaquero let me put 3 out of 6 rounds on bowling pins at 200 yards but I was using a rest and it took me a while to work out the hold. There's a LOT of front sight hanging in the air when you do something silly like that. :D

I'm no bullseye winning one hole wonder but I can shoot fairly straight. My pistol range targets are smiley faces. Yes, smiley faces. That way if you miss they're mocking you. :p

Would I be happier ridding the world of evil smiley faces using a 625 or a 25-2?
