the walther p5 was part of the family, p6 (sig 225) and p7 (hk) born from the munich olympics...which also resaulted in the hk pso-1 (?) sniper rifle.
i was part of the move to upgrade the standard police sidearm from the 7.65mm (.32) to the 9mm which had been the province of the military. IIRC most departments went with the p6 but the GSG-9 adopted the p7
