Tell me about the Remington Sportsman 12 please

I have been looking into a nice pump shotgun for a while, and saw this on in the paper for $200. He told me it was basically a 870, but I would like to know more about it. It supposedly has less than a box of shells thru it.

Thanks, Opie

IIRC, the Sportsman was an early attempt to corner the lower priced shotgun market. Some cosmetic differences, same action and feel.

$200 for a shotgun that you can use all your life and never have it glitch up? Buy it and enjoy...

The Sportsman 12 was made for a couple of years in the mid-80s. IIRC it has a vent rib, a 3" chamber and a hardwood stock. I want to say they made some at the end of the run with REM Chokes, but I can't honestly remember who told me that.

A good friend has a well-used, and reliable, Sportsman 12 Auto, which is an 1100 with a 2.75" chamber, VR, fixed MOD choke and a hardwood stock.

Sounds like a good deal to me, unless you're just dying to spend more for a new Express Magnum or a used walnut 870.
