Tell me about the High Standard .22

Our gun store has a used black High Standard HD Military. It was made in 1947, has a 6.75 inch barrel and adjustable sights. It looks like it is in good shape. Asking price is $525.

What can you tell me about this gun? What is it worth? Thanks!

It looks like a model B. I have one which I basically took from my father, because he doesn't shoot anymore. I think that might be a little high, but then again I didn't pay for mine. It is a nice plinking gun, except the one I have seems to jam alot. If you really want a good plinking gun, get the ruger mark II, Or a sig trailside. I think most people would agree.

If you're a collector, the HS may be worth the money, if you want a shooter, I'd look elsewhere. Personally, I like the Ruger MK-II, but others will point to the Browning Buckmark, another fine .22. Both of these choices will be half the price of the HS, and will shoot just as well, if not better.

WOW, thats BIG$$$$$.I"ve got High Standard! My dad gave it to me. I agree I would buy a Ruger MK II before spending that kind of $$$$. Jeff

I have a High Standard Supermatic Tournment that I bought from a fellow team member in about 1965 or 1966 while I was on the pistol team in the USAF. Paid $20 for it and knew it was a steal at that price even back then. Today (sure some of the reason is sentimental) $1000 would not touch it.

It may seem like a high price, but High Standards are sweet target pistols. If you are just wanting to plink, I wouldn't spend that much on any .22

If you want to compete, yes, the High Standard will be worth your money.

I can attest to that 1000%. They were just one fine .22 Semi. After 35 years or so of owning mine it is just as good as the day it was purchased.

If you are looking for a serious target pistol, there are better choices from High Standard. Some of their best pistols were made in the Hamden, CT plant from the 1950s-70s (series 102, 103, 104, 106, 107). The Supermatic Trophy, Citation, Victor, Olympic (.22 short) or Tournament are the better target models to consider and include adjustable sights and 2 different grip styles. The book "High Standard, A Collector's Guide to the Hamden & Hartford Target Pistols" by Tom Dance is an excellent resource. Also, visit this web site for more information: http://users.ntplx.net/~tm/jspacek.htm

You are paying a premium for the older gun.

The H-D Military is the most common of the fixed barrel pistols. They were either blued or parkerized but unless it's new and has the original box I think the price is very high.

There are far better pistols for both plinking and target use. The sights are very primitive compared to other more modern models.

I have a HD-military that I have had for years. It has a fantastic trigger pull, paid 150 bucks for it almost 15 years ago. I like the external hammer on it like the rest of my center fire handguns and it does shoot better than me. They are a real classic and on par with the old target woodsman colt. A bit out dated but I have yet to see a reason for me to replace it with a new gun that will have a ugly trigger compared to this gun. In 1947 they where one of the best money could buy as a pro match gun and a great plinker and small game gun today. Now if I could just find a deal on a Victor I may retire the old HD.
