Tell me about the 5.45mm...

What do you guys think of the 5.45mm soviet rifle round? Is this loaded by any American company? Any advantage over the .223? I have heard that this round might be banned from importation, any truth to this? Is there a threat of the supply drying up? I am tempted by a SAR2, but am not sure of the round. I would like to shoot it in the future, not have it be a paperweight due to a lack of ammo. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think it's a great little round. Cartridge looks to be the same one used in the 7.62x39 which packs quite a bit of powder behind that little bullet. In my expereince it is a very accurate round that hit it's target hard. There is an air pocket in the nose of the bullet that forces the weight ti shift when it impacts it's target causing the bullet to upset and create a large wound profile.

As of yet there are no American manufactureres of the 5.45x39 but this may change as this round becomes more popular. There is always the danger that importation of cheap ammunition like Wolf brand out of Russia might be banned. As far as I know there are no publicized plans to do so right now.

I have a Romak II high capacity rifle in this caliber, which in my opinion has much better quality than the SAR2 for about the same price. J&G Sales in Arizona still has them listed on their website for $299.

To add to what Cannon Cocker said, it is the current Russian rifle service cartridge used in the AK-74 and RPK-74. It was designed to imrove range, accuracy and lethality over the 7,62X39mm cartridge.

How is the romak 2? Do you get good relability and decent accuracy from it? I read in Hard Ball's post that the AK's are more accurate in 5.45 v. 7.62, has that been your experience? Thanks guys for all of your quick responses. This is a great forum.

would it be possible to make an SKS be able to fire the 5.45x39 round by just changing the barrel? i'd like to have an SKS in that round.
