Tell me about Rem Ultimate Home Defense

Is the Remington Ultimate Home Defense the same as the Golden Saber? Does it use the same bullets? The Remington website does not have a lot of information, and the limited pictures I have seen don't show them very clearly. They look like Golden Sabers in a new box.

I forgot which forum I read this from, but one user bought a box and compared them with a retail box of Golden Sabres. By all accounts, they are identical cartridges and loadings with one very notable exception. The QA on the RUHD bullets were very inconsistent. The hollow point cavity for example, varied in depth and edge width. The obvious conclusion was that the RUHD line is simply a means for Remington to sell the non-perfect (but still functional) bullets that could not be used for the higher end GS line, which has to follow a more strict QA protocol to remain competitive for LE contracts.

You may be able to find the post I am referring too using Google.

Yes, it's the same as Golden Saber, UHD is a marketing ploy. For my money, the R38S12 (158 gr. LSWCHP +P) is a more effective round (see specs from Remington web site below).

Here's an article comparing expansion properties of several popular cartridges, including the GS and the LSWCHP -

http://www.hipowersandhandguns.com/38 Special Expansion Tests.htm.

Some pretty interesting results there, the author did a good job of justifying expansion tests in water as well as comparing jacketed and unjacketed rounds in both snubbies and 4" revolvers. His conclusion that the Remington LSWCHP +P is a very dependable expander in all guns and media is well supported.

The aforementioned comparision picture was from AR15.com IIRC. Basically, the conclusion is/was that it's Golden Saber "seconds".
