Teen says he didn't mean to kill his teacher

The Associated Press

MIAMI (September 11, 2000 3:46 p.m. EDT http://www.nandotimes.com) - The 13-year-old charged with murdering his English teacher said he "wasn't thinking clearly" when he returned to school with a gun after being suspended for throwing water balloons.

Nathaniel Brazill told The Miami Herald in an interview published Monday that he pointed a gun at the teacher in the head May 26 after he was denied permission to talk to a girl in the classroom. Brazill said he didn't mean for the gun to go off.

Brazill, an honor student who had ambitions of becoming a Secret Service agent, said he was upset over his 10-day suspension, which would have taken effect the next school year.

"I thought I'd never catch up at the beginning of the next year," Brazill said. "All of my friends would leave me behind. I thought my future was ruined."

Brazill is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Barry Grunow, 35, who he said was his favorite teacher. He faces life in prison if convicted.

According to police, Brazill went home, retrieved a .25-caliber semiautomatic pistol he had stolen from his grandfather's house and returned to Lake Worth Community Middle School, where he shot Grunow in the head.

"I wasn't thinking clearly when I took the gun to school on that day. I was too upset," Brazill told the Herald. "I had the gun hidden in my dresser because I was going to ask my uncle in the Army to teach me how to use it for my future career in the military or law enforcement. I don't know how or why it happened the way it did. Mr. Grunow was the best."

Brazill said he went to Grunow's classroom to talk to a girl and "tell her to have a good summer."

Grunow told Brazill he couldn't talk to the girl, so the boy pulled the loaded gun out of his pocket and pointed it at the teacher. Brazill has said in a police confession that he didn't mean for the gun to go off.

"I smiled at Mr. Grunow and he smiled at me," Brazill told the Herald. "He pushed the gun away like he thought it was fake. It was kind of like a joke - the kind of joke we always had between us. Then the gun went off. I don't know how it happened."

Robert Udell, Brazill's attorney, has said that his client never intended to hurt anyone, calling him a "sweet, intelligent kid" whose life shouldn't be ruined by a tragic accident.

But State Attorney Barry Krischer said he has an obligation to try Brazill as an adult.

"The tragedy is what happened to Barry Grunow, not what happened to Brazill," he said.

I just want to point a few things out. I'll omit the bad grammar and such for now.. ;)

"wasn't thinking clearly"?
--Aparently. ::

"Brazill, an honor student who had ambitions of becoming a Secret Service agent, said he was upset over his 10-day suspension, which would have taken effect the next school year."
--Looks to me like his training is almost complete. He killed a man, because he was upset because he got a 10 day susspension? ::

"I thought I'd never catch up at the beginning of the next year," Brazill said. "All of my friends would leave me behind. I thought my future was ruined."
--13, and the rest of his life is ruined because of a silly suspension? ::

"According to police, Brazill went home, retrieved a .25-caliber semiautomatic pistol he had stolen from his grandfather's house and returned to Lake Worth Community Middle School, where he shot Grunow in the head."
--Okay.. he stole the gun. Looks like he meant to kill dude to me. ::

"I had the gun hidden in my dresser because I was going to ask my uncle in the Army to teach me how to use it for my future career in the military or law enforcement. I don't know how or why it happened the way it did. Mr. Grunow was the best."
--WTF is this?!! He stole a gun from grandpa so unckie could teach him how to shoot it? ::

Brazill said he went to Grunow's classroom to talk to a girl and "tell her to have a good summer."
--So he needed a gun so what..? ..the school bullies wouldn't steal his lunch money? ::

"Grunow told Brazill he couldn't talk to the girl, so the boy pulled the loaded gun out of his pocket and pointed it at the teacher. Brazill has said in a police confession that he didn't mean for the gun to go off."
--Well, I'm sure after he figured his a$$ was grass.. I'd be sayin' that too! ::

"I smiled at Mr. Grunow and he smiled at me," Brazill told the Herald. "He pushed the gun away like he thought it was fake. It was kind of like a joke - the kind of joke we always had between us. Then the gun went off. I don't know how it happened."
--This deserves another WTF!!! Pushed it away like he thought it was fake, or like he thought he was gonna get shot in the face by some little prick who thought it was a joke?! :: ::

"Robert Udell, Brazill's attorney, has said that his client never intended to hurt anyone, calling him a "sweet, intelligent kid" whose life shouldn't be ruined by a tragic accident."
--Sometimes I wonder how a lawyer could defend such a case.. Oh, yeah, the $$$. ::

"The tragedy is what happened to Barry Grunow, not what happened to Brazill," he said.
--DAMN STRAIGHT. ::

Punk should get the death penalty. A good hard working family man is dead because this punk planned his death.

Have you ever noticed that whenever one of these delinquents gets caught they always say he was an honor student? I guess things have changed.

Same thing happened to me in High School. I was minding my own business at a party and next thing you know I'm in a bedroom with a girl who's not my girlfriend. Well as soon as I realized the mistake I made (i got caught) I told my girlfriend I didn't mean for it to happen. We went into the room to talk and the next thing you know I must have slipped because I ended up in the bed with her....

I hope this punk gets what he deserves. You don't leave a school go get a gun and come back and point it at someones head and pull the trigger by accident. People need to start taking responsiblity for their actions. Could one of these punks just admit they come from a stable loving home and they just wanted to kill someone. Does anyone plead guilty these days?

Is it my imagination, or does he seem a little too well-spoken for an urban 13-year-old? As in, "coached"?

Sounds like a "sweet, intelligent kid" to me.

Sweet kids always steal guns from their relatives, and intelligent ones usually point loaded weapons at people they don't really mean to shoot.

Right.

Coached is right. And that's the best they can come up with?

A person should be presumed to intend the probable consequences of his or her actions.

When I first read this I thought the kid shot his teacher in the bathroom! So everytime I read "head" I thought "bathroom".

He should fry.

I could be wrong but I think a previous version of his story mentioned that he didn't MEAN to kill that particular teacher because he was going to the guidance office later to shoot one of the councilors. I think the intention was to get manslaughter rather then premed murder.
This is all a pile of fertilizer. The kid went home, got a gun, and shot a man to death. You can spread manure all over and see what grows but the facts remain. I hope they put this little turd into a cage with some huge, sweaty, hairy beast who is going to be his amateur proctologist for the next 70 hears.

I hope they put this little turd into a cage with some huge, sweaty, hairy beast who is going to be his amateur proctologist for the next 70 hears ...
How about putting him to work at hard labor for the rest of his life and having the wages that he earns go to help support the family of the man that he killed?

Put on the black cap for this one. He stole the gun (premeditation, and a felony), he had to go home and bring it back (can't claim emotional distress & spur of the moment). The rest of it is pure crap, trying to weasel out from under the 900-pound legal book about to be thrown at him.

If this kid is allowed to slide he will do it again.

Let me get this straight:
Kid gets mad, goes home to get gun, brings gun back to school, points gun at teacher and shoots him dead.

But he didn't mean to do it

BULL****

FUD's idea sounds good for starters.

Sorry folks but lets face it the kid will get out of this. At age 21 he will be free as a bird. All of the sheep will come out to help free this wayward child. It is unfair, unjust to lock him up. Any way you read it, the gun did it. It wasen't him, the gun it was the gun.

It's coming.

L-Frame,

Absolutely. Here is the "gun violence" boggie man in all of his glory. Since he's about to embark on intensive criminal training excersizes for the next few years when he gets out he'll no doubt kill again, and as you said, it will all be the fault of those evil guns because, as we all know, he's just a good kid who was just another victim of "gun violence".

Put him to work for 18 hrs a day to support the family he tore apart. When he goes home for his 6 hrs of rest a night, "rest" should be in the form of a 6X6 cell with...
quote:
some huge, sweaty, hairy beast who is going to be his amateur proctologist
for 20 years. If he lives (lets hope he does) Hold a gun in his face till "He pushed the gun away like ... it was fake.....kind of like a joke" Then shoot him.
