CNN founder Ted Turner has called the Fox television network a "propaganda voice" of the Bush administration and compared Fox News Channel's popularity to Adolf Hitler's rise in Germany before World War II.

Turner, in a speech Tuesday to the National Association of Television Programming Executives, also targeted "gigantic companies whose agenda goes beyond broadcasting" for timidity in challenging the Bush White House.

"There's one network, Fox, that's a propaganda voice for them," the cable news pioneer said. "It's certainly legal. But it does pose problems for our democracy when the news is 'dumbed-down.'"

Fox News in New York issued a statement saying, "Ted is understandably bitter having lost his ratings, his network and now his mind _ we wish him well."

Turner, 66, stepped down as vice chairman of AOL Time Warner in May 2003.

During a question-and-answer session moderated by former CNN anchorman Bernard Shaw, Turner called it "not necessarily a bad thing" that Fox ratings top CNN and other cable news networks.

"Adolf Hitler was more popular in Germany in the early '30s than ... people that were running against him," Turner said in remarks videotaped by conference administrators. "So just because you're bigger doesn't mean you're right."

Convention spokeswoman Michelle Mikoljak said the association had no comment about Turner's comments.

Turner heads an Atlanta-based philanthropic and business empire.

Wow......thats sad.....

Hey, I think this retort from Fox says it all. I mean, the guy was stupid enough to marry Hanoi Jane...

Suma......

I liked your Demo Seal... The guy has went over the falls without his barrel... Sad to say the Dem Party never got to the falls.....lost in a traffic jam between there and L.A. (Hollywierd) :D

PS.... "A large number (1-1000?) Hollywood Actors have said they are speaking to Gov. Swartzynager about getting non-citizens drivers licenses.... Wow, what a super great idea........NOT

Wouldn't it be nice not to hear anything from the left coast for just one day? :D

Technically it appears....

He is comparing Bush to Hitler and Fox to the German media at the time of Hitler's rise to power.

That is disgusting, regardless of how he feels about Bush. It is unfair and inflammatory to compare a U.S. President to Hitler, who masterminded genocide and sparked a war in Europe that killed 10s of millions.

That being said, I try not to watch much corporate media. IMO, both CNN and Fox have shown their colors and neither are fair nor balanced. What a sad state of affairs we have when the media that people need to be able to trust in a free society are an intergral part of the machine.

I tend to watch BBC sometimes, but printed news is just much quicker than TV. I can get what I need and move on with my day instead of having to sit in front of the boob tube for a half hour.

To me its sickening, but I think it may be a desparate ploy by a failing old
man to generate attention to himself one last time by stating something so
obviously imflamatory. I'm so glad our president doesn't stoop to their level,
with all the name calling and open bashing. President Bush gets openly
ripped on and insulted worse that anyone I can remember. Its sad really,
that so many people have so much disrespect for the office of president.
How are other people and nations supposed to respect our leaders if WE
don't show respect? I mean, even if you HATE the man to DEATH, you bash
him in private, but in PUBLIC, to the rest of the WORLD who is watching us
under a microscope, you BACK YOUR COUNTRY, AND ITS LEADERS TO THE
WALL!

Even if Kerry would have won, I may have badmouthed him a bit in private,
but in public, I back him as our president, and NOBODY BADMOUTHS OUR
COUNTRY in front of me. We have people in our own government and media
that openly bash the president. No wonder we look so foolish and weak to
the rest of the world..........its sickening really, that people have no more
good sense than that..............

Consider the source...any man that would marry Hanoi Jane can't be wrapped all that tight to begin with...and you know what they say about opinions!

The only reason this man is given the time of day is that fact he is rabidly liberal and as such can do no wrong, if a hard-line right-winger said the reverse about CNN they’d be laughed out of town as being completely nuts, which Ted truly is.

Anyone still wonder what is on that tape he made and had placed into a safe at CNN HQ, with orders to be played to the world upon learning the end of the world was on the horizon?

Truly a disturbed man…

More WWF. Although Turner may have some friendly rivalry going over who can make the most money - Rupert Murdoch is one of Ted Turner's ideological cronies.
