I didnt see the piece (dont have a TV and don't miss it!). Ted is one gung ho sort of guy and for that, a man after my own heart. The issue was raised regarding appearances and, unfortunately, there is some reason for concern there. I like cammies myself but seldom wear them because people usually assume youre a military wannabe blap blap whatever.
There are rules to the society game and that is: appearances count. Should you be so lucky as to be present with people who have more depth of understanding then this will be a lesser issue, however it is an important issue for the great average and so use it. In Example:
Sometimes I play chess (badly). There are rules to chess and by sitting with someone at the board I agree by default to those rules, I can not arbitrarily say "well I think the rook should also be able to move diagonally" realistically you can move the rook that way but not according to the rules.
So I accept the rules and play the best game I can with them.
Such is the rule of appearance, it is contrived but it DOES have an influence on people, a big one. By recognizing this rule it can be one more tool in the toolbox that can be used to win.
For me I just try and remember that it is a BS way of dealing with people and my friends are exempt.
