Tec-9 questions

I'm curious about the Tec-9. I saw an AB-10, its descendent, in a gun store recently, but it doesn't have the cool look of the Tec-9. I like the way this pistol looks. I've not been able to get reliable info on how it SHOOTS, however. I've heard some people say its okay. I've heard others say it's an utter piece of crap that jams every other shot and can only fire FMJ ammo (seems to me such a gun never would've been so popular on the market). So, has anyone fired one? How does it handle? I've heard there are auto versions. ARE there select fire versions? Thanks.

I have an AB10. I believe the only difference between the AB10 and the Tec 9 is the barrel. The AB10 barrel isn't threaded which prevents any extensions (devices that can be used to hold the gun) from being added. Mine jammed every round for about the first 25 rounds. After that it has been flawless. Actually, the more I shoot it, the better it seems to get. IMO, the AB10 is actually pretty well made and the accuracy is not bad for a 3" barrel. It's not very practical, but it makes for an interesting conversation piece.

Right on Hammy! I bought my AB10 because of the gun bans.. I have the original 36rd mag for it and bought another 36 and 50. The 36's fire just fine but I had a slight problem with the 50. I replaced the spring (stronger spring) and if fires very well for 49 rounds.. the 50th is ejected with the 49th casing. I find the AB10 (as well as with the Tec-9) to be a "fun" gun to fire. Heck, I don't use it for target accuracy but for letting fly 36 to 49 rounds in the lest amount of time I can. But, I've found it pretty accurate for such a short barreled pistol. Sure, I can't hit the X with just one shot but I do have 35 to 48 more to follow :D. All in all.. it's not a gun to buy or use for self defense (unless it's in the home) carry or to go deer hunting with.. but in it's own way, it's a symbol of freedom.. only free men and women can own a pistol like this... unless of course you live in a socialist, non American State... kali, ny, and others come to mind.

Not long ago I ran into a guy at the range who had a brand new one of these; it was the first firearm he'd ever owned. He was having considerable trouble with it. Eventually, I taught him how to load and seat a magazine and chamber a round, but the gun itself was jamming every five or six rounds. I haven't seen him since, so I don't know if the problem was just that the gun needed broken in or not. I do know that I would spend my money on something else based on my experience that afternoon.

House, if that is true, and if the right people find out, you may just have won an extended vacation in the all expense paid Graybar Hotel.

Shhhhhh.

I've always thought they looked kind of neat, but was too embarrased to buy one. I didn't want the guys at the shop to think I was the kind of know-nothing that would buy one. Not saying you guys are... you know what I mean.

I was told that they jam every other round. However, as mentioned, it may be more of a fun gun then a practical one.

Okay. You have convinced me to post.
I had a friend whe owned one for the sole reason that it was politicaly incorrect to do so.
The AB-10 he had appeared to be higher quality than the Tech-9s I have seen.
The weapon cycled reliably using 32(?) round magazines.
The main problem I saw was the field stripping. Huge pain.
The short barrel was strange considering the pistols' bulk. He thought so as well and machined a 10.4" barrel.
My opinion on the weapon is this: SILLY.

I bought the AB10 as a collector's item, not as a defensive weapon nor a target handgun. I enjoy shooting mine and because it has a fixed barrel it is also the most accurate 9MM handgun that I, personally, have shot. I paid 159.95 which included a 32 rd mag and case. Everything is relative! I've never heard of anyone putting it in the same class as a Glock. However, I wouldn't have any reservations about it's reliability in a defensive situation. I guess the AB10 is just getting the same bashing that the SKS's used to get. I remember when the SKS cost 69.95 and anyone who bought one was getting ripped off. Sorry, I don't mean to lecture. I hope I don't offend anyone. It's just my opion.
