I thought i knew a little about rifles until today.
i had never heard or seen a thompson center TCR. for those of you that are as unfamiliar as i was/am with this rifle it is a break down interchangable BBL rifle much more refined that the contenders or encores. it has no hammer and has double/set triggers. a deep bluing and very nice wood in a slim stock.
i think i have zeroed in on my next "gotta have".
anyone w/ thoughts or info on these rifles that could share it w/ me would be thanked.

There are two basic models of the TCR rifles: both are now discontinued by T/C.
The original model, called the TCR-83 or Aristocrat, has the double-set triggers. It was introduced in 1983; discontinued 1986. Stock had a cheekpiece, forearm was checkered.
In 1986 T/C reintroduced the TCR with a single trigger and simplified stock, no cheekpiece or checkering. This model was discontinued in 1992.
Both models shared some undesirable characteristics. The '83 had a set trigger so far removed from the pistol grip as to be unusable for anyone not an NBA forward. This awkward design of the pistol grip was continued in the '86, but the trigger was more to the rear so it wasn't as bad.
Both had a godawful 'needs two hands to unlatch it' safety that had a lock-on-the-lock design that was an insult to the kind of dedicated rifleman who would be its most likely owner.
The choice of calibers in which the guns were offered were rich in short case designs, except for .30-06 and .270. There were no magnum calibers offered until a beef-up of the locking lugs in 1992, when the gun became available in .375 H&H and .416. If you can find one of these it will be a rarity.
A friend of mine has a 1986 single trigger model with a Fox Ridge heavy barrel. The trigger is very heavy and the design isn't easy to tweak, but the gun shoots fairly well...better out of the box than most Ruger #1's.
You shouldn't hesitate to buy one of these because it's discontinued, as T/C is one of the best companies for service in the industry.

I have had a stock TCR rifle from the factory in 25-06 and an SSK custom TRC rifle in 7mm STW. I no longer own either one. My advice is to save your money unless you are just a collector of firearm history.
