Hello, does anyone know how the following cartridges is to shoot in a TC encore pistol with a 14" barrel ?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.25-06_Remington 120 gr (7.8 g) SP @ 912 m/s =3,232 J

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7_mm-08_Remington 140 gr (9.1 g) Nosler Partition @850 m/s = 3,304 J
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/6.5x55mm 100 gr (6.5 g) HP 970 m/s=3,050 J

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.30-06_Springfield 150 gr (9.7 g) Nosler Ballistic Tip 890 m/s =3,820 J
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.308_Winchester 150 gr (9.7 g) Nosler tip 860 m/s=3,590 J

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.338_Federal 180 gr (12 g) Accubond @860 m/s =4,341 J

The minimum energy level required for big game @100 meters is 2600 J.
The velocities listed are from rifle barrels.

The 7mm-08 shoots great from a 15" barrel. I haven't done a ton of experimenting, but 139 and 140gr bullet easily exceed 2500 fps. A 14" barrel would likely lose about 50 fps. You could still be over 2600J at 100 meters.

The others, I've never tried.

I have shot many of the calibers you mention with full size rifles. Though I am sure there is a huge difference between an 18/22” barrel vs. a 14” barrel, I would guess that beyond the 7mm-08 things will get a little less “fun” in a 14” barrel than a full size rifle.

I think the .25-06 may a bit small for larger game. And if you can handle the recoil, I think the .338 would be fantastic. The happy medium in my eyes would be the 6.5X55 and 7mm-08.

I personally would go with either of the latter – and between the two, I would choose the 6.5X55 if it was a 14” barrel (less recoil make me a better shot). YMMV – Good luck with your project! Sounds like it’ll be fun. :)

The 6.5X55 Krag is a Norwegian cartridge.

The 6.5x55mm cartridge is highly esteemed as a hunting round in Europe, Scandinavia, and North America. It is used for harvesting most kind of game including reindeer and moose in Scandinavia, while in Canada and the United States it is used for taking deer and other medium-sized game. Sportsmen who favor the round laud the combination of low recoil coupled with the cartridge's inherent accuracy and superb penetrative qualities.

The original loads that are safe in a Krag-Jørgensen is 2700 kg/cm2 chamber pressure.

DO NOT FIRE 3800 BAR=55000PSI 6.5x55 KRAG LOADS IN A KRAG-JØRGENSEN!!

I have .308 Winchester and 6.5x55 pistol length barrels for my Encore. Neither of them is particularly difficult to shoot and both are very accurate with good load development.

As a point of reference, I also have a 454 Casull pistol barrel for my Encore. The recoil from it is much sharper and more difficult to manage than either the 308 or the 6.5x55.

The 25-06 with standard factory load would kill the deer as much from muzzle flash as from lead.

Could you tell me....

The 6.5X55 Krag is a Norwegian cartridge.

How does the 6.5x55 Krag differs from the 6.5x55 Swede?
Is the case different? Rimmed? Pressures?

Here in the US, the only cartridge we associate with the Krag rifle is the .30-40 Krag, also once known as the .30 USA or .30 Army.

I have heard of Krag rifles in 6.5x55, but always assumed it was the Swede cartridge (although I knew the rifles were Norwegian). I have a reference book that says that the 6.5x55 Swede was adopted by Norway for its 1894 and 1912 Krag-Jorgensen rifles. Is this correct? Or is the 6.5x55 Krag a different round?

It is the same cartridge ;)

6.5x55mm or 6.5x55mm SE (C.I.P.) Also known as 6.5x55mm Krag, 6.5x55mm Swedish Mauser or 6,5x55mm Mauser.

Due to different interpretations of the standard, i.e. the standards of manufacturing using maximum chamber in the Krag vs. minimum chamber in the Swedish Mauser, a small percentage of the ammunition produced in Norway required a heavy push on the bolt handle to chamber in the Swedish Mauser rifle.A rumour arose not long after the 6.5 x 55mm cartridge was adopted that one could use Swedish ammunition in Norwegian rifles, but not Norwegian ammunition in Swedish rifles.

After the rumor of this difference first surfaced in 1900, it was examined by the Swedish military. They declared the difference to be insignificant, and that both the Swedish and Norwegian ammunition was within the specified parameters laid down for the 6,5x55.

Despite this finding, the Swedish weapon-historian Josef Alm repeated the rumor in a book in the 1930s, leading many to believe that there was a significant difference. The CIP MAP for the 6.5 x 55 is 380 MPa (55000 PSI). SAAMI MAP for this cartridge is 46,000 CUP or 51000 PSI. All Swedish Mauser actions were proof-tested with a single 6.5 x 55mm proof load developing approximately 55,000 CUP (66,000 psi).

The 7mm-08 is sweet low recoil Load it to the power you need.
Great accuracy/range. The one I used was 15'' Loved it.

this thread is worthless without pictures
