TC Contender Action

I just bought a Thompson Center Contender "Youth Carbine" for my 8 year old.
The problem is that the trigger guard is too stiff for the boy to pull when he wants to break open the action to reload.
The gun is not "broke", its just that whats easy for an adult is way too heavy for the little guy.
Can this be lightened? Is there any down side to lightening this - like maybe the action might pop open under recoil or something?
Any help would be appreciated, this will be the boys primary rifle and I want it to work for him.

If you have the original model T/C there were 2 different positions with the pivot pin. The early ones had less leverage and generally are very difficult to open, the later ones much easier. T/C used to offer a service to change the earlier action. They have been in and out of business so often that I have lost track of what is happening with them, but give them a call and see what is available.
