Taurus vs. Ruger

Ive heard alot of various things about both the taurus and ruger in the 454, pros and cons to both. any personal experiences. me and my buddy were having a debate on which is the better make. I personally like the ruger. He argues the that it kicks more compared to the ported taurus. I hear alot of stories about the timing being of on the taurus and shaving the bullet. I would appreciate and experience with either makes perferably in my favor :D thanks

The Taurus does not kick as much because of the porting and the Ruger .480 and .454 are true six-guns; however Taurus thought Ruger's decision was 'unsafe' because of the milimeters between chambers so they (Taurus) stuck with a 5 round cylinder in the .480 and .454.

Taurus guns are 'nice' they look 'spiffy' in their brushed stainless look however' Ruger's Super Red Hawk is designed to be functional with integral sight mounts and includes the scope rings as well as it is available in a "Target-Gray" stainless or anti-glare stainless so stalking can be made possible and easier.

Ruger has a reputation (good and bad) and so does Taurus (I've heard lots of bad and some good), the Taurus has a nice sound action out of the box but I cannot vouch for it over time. My dad has a Ruger Redhawk which is about 20 years old and is still as tight as it when he traded it for labor.

Taurus and Ruger will both stand behind their guns as will anyone who is a fanatic of both, I guess it's up to you to choose which family you lie with, and some fence-sitters who have no brand-loyalty will preach to you as well. Frankly though my family is Ruger... I've fired many of their guns and can safely say it's a passionate relationship ;)

I would choose the Ruger over the Taurus anyday. In my experience, I have not noticed that much difference between ported and unported guns but that is me and I may not have shot loads big enough to notice any compensating effects from ported barrels.

Many people like Taurus. I'm not one of them. When I asked around about revolvers, all my friends recommended Ruger or S&W w/ a heavy lean on S&W. It could very well be brand name loyalties and I think that drives many of us to buy the guns we own.

As for resale value, I don't think a Taurus has the same resale value that a Ruger or S&W have. I may be wrong.

I will back you up on the Ruger's having a higher resale value, just take a look at the used gun case it will be evident quickly. My mossberg 835 ultimag has a ported barrel, and yes I notice the recoil reduction (a very little bit) but when it comes to it when I shoot 3.5" number 5 out of it, it is still going to kick

One point about the Taurus Raging Bull is the frame is reduced which allows for a grip with much more give than the Ruger. Smith copied the idea on their new X frame 500 Mag guns. The Taurus with porting, heavy underlug barrel and the grip makes it much more comfortable when shooting full bore 454 loads. I got to say that if you are scoping it the Super Red Hawk has a great mouting system. My two cents for what its worth :)

My wife has a REDHAWK .44 w/ the scope mounts. It is very easy to put a scope on without altering the gun any.
