Taurus Tracker

I just looked at a Taurus 4" Tracker, 357 mag., titanium. Their new grips feel like they were made for my hand! The light weight and balance of the gun seem great. Trigger action is very good. Has anyone shot one yet? I'm seriously considering ditching my 686 for one of these.

I have onl;y shot one in .41 Mag. It is a very controlable gun. The porting and the grip design makes it easy to shoot even full power loads. I would like to get one myself in either .357 or .44 Mag. I would imagiane the .44 Mag has a lot more felt recoil to it but can't say for sure untill I shoot it.
They are still hard to come by so I would pick it up if I were you. What is the asking price. I have seen them go in the 400-450 range.

I just picked up the SS Tracker (I didn't think the extra $250 was worth it for the titanium version...also, I think the weight helps control the revolver).
This is one well made, sweet handgun!
Taurus has a real winner here!!
But, I'm not too comfortable with the "ribber" grips yet. This is personal preference.

The price is $500 after tax, fees, etc. I can't seem to get this pistol out of my mind. What do you think s a good asking price for a S&W 686, Hogue grips (rubber) in excellant condition? I'm thinking $300. If I do a trade I probably won't get over $250 for it. My 686 is a great gun and I don't know if the trade would really be worth it but damn if I'm not fixated on that Tracker. (against my better judgment!)
Ezekial, how is the accuracy on your SS model?

I just ordered the 627 Tracker in stealth grey titanium.
I normaly shoot 1911,but wanted a revolver.
It was not my first choice, as a matter of fact I never considered it until it was in my hands.
It felt right.
I pointed the gun at a wall with my eyes closed. When I opened my eyes, my sight alignment could not have been better.
I am curios of what kind of accuracy this weopon will have.

I shot this gun (in .357) a few months ago when Taurus came to my town to sponsor a family shot-out expo and I really liked it a lot. I like the rust protection of titanium model but the SS model absorbs the kick a whole lot better (due to it's greater weight). As a result, I've held off buying one since I'm torn between the two.

While on this subject, does anyone know if I can shot 180gr Federal© CastCore .357 magnum ammo with a velocity of 1250fps and 625ft-lb of muzzle energy on a regular basis or will it damage the gun after prolonged use?

(I have an alligator problem in my neck of the woods and I've been advised in other trends that this would be the best handgun ammo to use against them.)

Two of us shot the Tracker with various brands and loads (including some hot reloads).
Accuracy, once the sights were in, was excellent (my friend is a much better shot then I). I kept them in the 9 and 10 rings (occasional flier to the 8 ring) as 20 yards. His were all in the 9 or ten..mostly the ten.
This was all free standing, single and double action.
As I mentioned...the "ribber" grips didn't grab me right off...my buddy really liked them.

BTW, I'd traded a Taurus Model 669 (similar specs to the Tracker, but 16 oz heavier, 6 shot vs 7 in the Tracker). I got $250 for it.
One thing I really like about the newer Taurus revolver designs is the detent lock at the yoke (so the gun locks foreward and aft of the cylinder..very positive locking).
I thought very seriously about the titanium, but the cost/benefit led to the stainless gun.
I do have an 85UL (aluminum frame, titanium barrel shroud and cylinder). I really wanted the Ti version, but the weren't to be had when I bought the 85UL. This is my most frequently carried sidearm.

I don't know what your S&W is worth, but unless you've got to sell it to by the Tracker, I wouldn't. But if it's an "either or" situation, get the Tracker in the material that best suits you.

How much are the stainless steel models going for?

Also the titanium models don't have titanium barrels, just a titanium shroud around a stainless barrel - someone correct me if I'm wrong...

That is correct, the titanium models have barrel shrouds (titanium is too elastic for the rifling according to Taurus) as well as hardened steel internals.
I paid $399.00 for mine. I believe the MSRP is $445.00.

Jaeger,

I sold a S&W 686 Stainless w/ 4" barrel, Hogue fingergroove grips in excellent condition for $350 a few months ago. The buyer and I were both happy. $300 is just a little cheap IMO. I also think the tracker is neat, although I sold my 686 to buy a S&W Mountain Gn. in 41mag (before they committed their cowardly, self-serving, undignified act).

Good Luck,
Dave

Thanks for all of the replies. I think I will be getting one of these sooner or later. The 41 mag would be great but I just don't need another caliber to reload for right now. My 44 mag Bisley Blackhawk will continue to fill my heavy hitter needs!
