Taurus Safety Feature?

New member here. Greetings all.

Just a quick question.

I Recently bought my first gun, a Taurus 617T.

I noticed a little loose plate that comes up to cover half the firing pin when cocked (where the hammer contacts the pin). When the barrel is pointed at about 45 deg downward or less the plate (for gravity's sake) falls forward and catches beneath the pin and keeps the hammer from pulling far back enough to cock.

Is this a safetly feature to keep the gun from accidentally firing if the gun is pulled from a holster and the trigger is carelessly grabbed? Or is this just a piece of possibly defective hardware?
I couldn't find anything mentioning it in the literature.

Otherwise gun functions fine...

I'm pretty sure you're describing the transfer bar. Prevents firing pin from being struck by hammer unless trigger is pulled.....

Razorplane: Yes that is the transfer bar and it should not be doing that. It sounds as if it may have a little burr or something that's catching an edge on the firing pin. Even when the gun is pointed down, it should slip up and over the firing pin.

If you know someone who can work on revolvers it will only take a second to determine the problem and a few minutes to polish the transfer bar if that's what it is.

I just realized that you said this is your first gun. You do know, of course, that you should squirt a LITTLE oil in the back of the gun, to help all the parts slide around.
