I have a Taurus 357 model 669. It has been a really good gun with no problems. Well, recently it will not ignite the primer when being shot DA. Its about a 50/50 chance. In SA it will fire every time with no problems. Lock up is good and so is timing. Any ideas?
 
The springs are stock (original) and the gun has about 1500 rounds through. I wouldnt think it would need new springs yet. The primers are winchester and my reloads. I thought it might be me not geting the primers seated,but it wont shoot factory ammo either. Thanks for any help
 
Shoot a bunch of .38 specials in it lately?

Could be the crud ring is preventing the .357 from seating all the way and the hammer is completing the process. A good way to tell is if they fire on the second try.

Also check the castle nut on the bottom of the taurus spring guide rod you may need to rotate it to increase spring pressure (see the taurus owner's manual).
 
Why would you bother buying a .357 only to shoot .38 special only? Sell it and buy one chambered for 38.
 
This was typical in two of the 3 Taurus guns I have owned. I believe it is a spring issue. On one gun I shimmed the spring and the second I replaced the spring. Switching to Federal primers also helps. If you look closely you will see that when shooting DA the hammer cocks back about1/4 to 3/8" short of where it does when you thumb it back in SA. I believe this is enough to reduce the weight of the hammer strike and result in misfires.
 
Thanks for the info. I tried shimming the spring but after the hammer was cocked in position for sa shooting there was no room for the shim.It seems that when it is cocked the spring is completly compresed. I looked at the spring kit that Wolf offers, but they are reduced weight springs. Im thinking that a reduced weight would hit the primer even less. Unless the stock spring is just junk. Il try something.
