Taurus Revolver Owners

I bought a Titanium .41 Mag Tracker a few weekends ago and brought it out to the range for the first time yesterday. I should mention at this point that it's the first ported handgun I own. I was concerned about shooting lead out of it, but had purchased some Silvertips and Federal "CastCore" 250gr rounds. I shot no more than 10 rounds of the federal hard cast lead and found no indication of lead buildup in the ports. I reload, and am planning on reloading for this revolver, so I would like the option of loading hardcast heavy rounds for it. My question for those that have experimented with lead loads in the Taurus ported guns, will I be able to shoot 15-20 lead rounds at a time without leading the ports. Also if the ports do lead, what is a good way of cleaning them (normally use Lewis lead remover for the bore) and is there any potential of harming the revolver if the ports do lead heavily....Bogger

My wife and I carry Taurus revolvers, ported. Hers is a .357, mine a .44 sp. I reload for both, and have fired as many as 50 SWC rounds before cleaning, and leading just hasn't been a problem. They're good guns, and the ports appear to have been relieved a bit. I don't use extremely hot reloads with lead bullets; that might be a problem. But with moderate loads, no problem. Shoot often, shoot straight!

We routinely fire 100 - 200rds of HBWC, LSWC and LRN through my wifes 4" Tracker with no real problems. I did have some leading at the rear of the barrel with the LSWC's but that was due to driving them way too slow (3.2gr bullseye, 4.0+ cleared that up).

I do notice some leading outside the ports, and I use a brass screwdriver type dealy (on the end of a cleaning brush) to simply scrape it off. Nothing major and I've never seen anything on that revo lead up enough to cause concern.

The only ported Taurus I have that has seen a significant number of rounds is my 669, and the barrel is slightly bored out to a larger diameter under the ports. In the few hundred 158gr SWC and 148gr WC .38specials it's seen, I have never noticed any leading worth mentioning

I have the M44 .44mag with 4" barrel and porting. I did have some lead buildup outside the ports and on the front sight after firing a box of 50 LWSC reloads. But I was using Hodgdon H110, and I think that its fast burn rate may make the leading worse. At any rate, I decided to stick to JHP's after that because I didn't like having to scrub the ports and front sight. If you're shooting hardcast though, I would think you would have little problem with leading. The hardcast that I shoot occasionally (Federal 300 gr. Castcore) is very hard and does not lead the barrel.

BTW... even after a box of 50, I was more bummed about the red insert on the front sight being leaded than the ports being clogged. They did not clog at all, just got dirty.

Also, I don't know about you, but after a box or two, I am tired of the powder bits from the muzzle blast hitting me in the face anyways. I have a Taurus M44 with 2 3/4" barrel that's not ported that does not do that to me. But I can't shoot it for very long either because it's too painful on my hand. In contast, .44 special is just plain enjoyable to shoot. Too bad they don't make a ".41 special" for really light .41 mag loads...

Thanks Leatherneck, braindead0, Snowdog and Red Label.

Between this thread and a few others I have had excellent responses and see no need to research this subject further. I now have a nice warm fuzzy feeling about shooting lead out of my Tracker. Great stuff, I love being able to shoot lead plinkers as well as the heavy stuff. Thanks again.......Bogger

Taffin has done a lot of shooting with these ported revolvers. His only cautions about lead bullets are - wear ear protection and wear eye protection as hazardous things can come out of the ports. Otherwise they seem to work very well.

Leading is not a problem with my titanium tracker in .41 mag.By the time I've shot 25 rounds, the knuckle of my long finger is so bruised that I can't take more pain. The combination of the light weight and the porting causes the recoil to be straight back and so the trigger guard tries to turn my finger to hamburger.Maybe I'm a sissy but recoil ordinarily doesn't bother me even with full house loads in my Smith 629.Anyone else have this problem?

On the back of the July issue of The American Rifleman
there is a pic of the new Taurus Tracker in .45 caliber. Good
looking weapon; anybody got one yet, and if so how does
it stack up with other Taurus product's?

Best Wishes,

mec: If Taffin goes along with the ports, that's good enough with me.

gunorthopod: I've shot up to and including 35 Rem, 50AE, 475 Linebaugh and 454 Cassull. Ten to fifteen rounds is my max though. Having said that my finger still gets rapped with the Tracker.
