Taurus Repair on the 650

Well after approximately a two month wait I finally got my Taurus 650 CIA back yesterday. It was returned with no explanation of what exactly was repaired. The invoice simply stated that the revolver had been repaired under the Taurus warranty. It appears that they widened the barrel cylinder gap slightly. I would be satisfied with this, but it also appears that they damaged the bluing around the seam of the side plate. The damage is slight, but when the gun is held in the right light you can see a series of speckles that almost look like water spots, but they do not wipe off. I suppose some people wouldn't be bothered by this, but it really upsets me that the gun was not returned to me in the same condition that Taurus received it. From my dealings with Taurus customer service I'm sure that when I call on Monday I'll get some sort of excuse and condescending response.

On a brighter note the 650 functioned perfectly today. I got it heated up nicely and there was no binding or drag. Trigger pull was consistently smooth. Very nice revolver over all. I'm wondering if the speckling was caused by the gun laying in a foam case for two months. I sent it back in the original foam lock box. The foam has a cut out of a traditional hammer revolver M85 in it. My concealed hammer version lays overtop of this trigger cut out at the hammer position. This corresponds with the area of speckling perfectly. Anyone have any suggestions on how to get it off. I tried a light coating of Flitz metal polish, but this didn't help (and I don't want to damage the bluing). Could it be anything other that rust? It's interesting the speckling is only along the border of one side of the seam, it does not cross over to the other side of the seam.

Don't you love it? Taurus usually won't get it right the first time, but if you send it back enough, they'll hack at it until it will function. They'll never tell you what they did, or how they damaged it. Send it back now and run the risk of getting a new one with its own batch of problems.

Nah, I haven't learned MY lesson about Taurus.

Now I'm worried. I just bought a 650 CIA last week and it locked up completly after 9 rounds and had to be sent back to Taurus. The gun shop I bought it from shipped it free of charge for me, but jeez is this what I can expect? Man I'm kicking my own butt for not springing the extra Franklin on a S&W. :(

I found a stainless ultralite Taurus 5 shot snubby a while back and I researched Taurus on the web as well as at the gun shop and I ended up with a hard chromed Keltec P-11, which I'm very happy with. I saw people having to many problems right out of the box with their Taurus revolvers so I passed on buying the Ultra Lite.

Well because my Internet provider provides much the same kind of service as Taurus I haven't been able to get onto the forum since last week. Today they finally got it fixed and credited my account 1 week. Over the weekend I tried a number of things to remove the rust from my 650. When all else failed I buffed out this area and reblued. I now have a few buffing scratches you can only see in certain light and a darker patch of bluing about the width of a marker tip along the side plate seam. Believe it or not I prefer this to the rust speckling. So far the 650 is working 100%. Since I like the design I'll probably keep it. I might consider trading it in on a stainless version, but am hesitant for all of the reasons posted above. Thanks for the feedback.

I will say this about my 650 it is very nicely balanced and shoots great, it's just too bad that it didn't even make it though 2 full cylinders before it broke. From what I had read on GT and TFL the revolvers were supposed to be great and the semi-autos were junk. Well, I'm here to tell you their revolver quality does not impress me either. I can believe that they produce a few lemons but since I bought my 650 CIA I have had the chance to converse with friends and online firearm enthusiast folks who have owned Taurus firearms and right now it's about 3 out of 5 that had major problems with them right after purchasing them. All of the ones who had to have warranty repair on their Taurus's had problems with the repair side of Taurus as well like scratches, not being fixed right, timing off, etc... I for one am not going to carry something that may or may not function when the SHTF. I have already worked out a deal with my local gun shop who I bought it from and he will take it back at full price for trade in on something else, in which I will be purchasing a new S&W J-frame.

Sorry Taurus, I have never bought a gun before that completely seized within 10 rounds and I have owned some real Saturday night specials in my time. There is no reason to save a $100 dollars on your POS when I have to spend double that to constantly send it in for half assed lifetime warranty work.

Taurus, along with ALL the other gun manufacturers, should log on to TFL every once in a while and get some REAL WORLD feedback on their products.......

former owner of a 445 that had two trips back to factory, no explanation given as to what caused breakage............
