Taurus pt740 slim opinions please.

Well since no one else is going to, I'll be lame and put my own opinion on here.

I picked it up and put 350 problem free rounds through it with zero malfunctions. It's a pretty impressive little gun.

There is a TTAG article about the pt, speaking very highly of it, and putting its reliability above more expensive pistols in its class.

The complaint I here on the forums, is the lack of magazines in the market.

Not the .40 version, but the current edition of G&A just put the 9mm version through a comparison test with 9 other small 9mm guns. In their test, it faired very well and was one of the top performers.

^^ I have seen similar comparisons on a few different YouTube channels. It generally holds its own against the competition.

I owned the 9mm version and it was completely reliable for me. The trigger just didn't get along with my super long fingers very well.

My brother bought one of these a few years ago. It was a nifty little thing with no cycling issues whatsoever. The one problem it did have was that it was only accurate to about 2 yards. Yes, that was TWO yards.

I started up a little research of my own and found that a number of these had a problem from the factory where the barrel would fail to properly reseat itself after every shot, thus changing the point of aim. I never found out why it happens but the word was that it was something that Taurus had given up even trying to fix, even resorting to simply sending some people brand new guns after several failed repair attempts.

Now apparently not all of them had this issue so there are a number of them out there that function perfectly but no one we got to shoot his could even mark the paper further back than 10 feet. It was actually pretty sad because the thing felt so good in my hand that I wanted to like it and that's saying something as I'm not much of a Taurus fan as a rule. :(

To sum things up, all I can say is if you can't shoot it before you buy it I would just walk away. If it works it might just end up being your new favorite CCW gun but there's also a major risk of just pouring money down the drain.

I don't know that I would want one in .40. {just me}
I bought the 709 in early 2009. {9mm version} Still have it, still carry it when I need a small weapon to carry. Mine is quite accurate even at 25 yds.

Owning a Taurus has been Misserable Experience

I bought a 740 Slim over a year ago - what a total waste of money!! Gun broke on 10th round - either it is dangerously weak or mine was defective out of the box. I am STILL waiting for this issue to be resolved by Taurus, so I will not post the rest of the details until we reach a resolution (I do not want to give them any more information to identify me and maybe use my negative attitude about them to make my case worse). Suffice it to say you will probably be sorry if you ever need to contact them.

Better read the 740 review on gunsholstersandgear.com for more info on both that gun and the company's customer service.

I have 4 Taurus that have been bought over the last 2 years. A mix of wheels and semis. I can't speak for their CS, since even though they have 10000 rounds dispersed between them, they have never had the slightest issue. Have never second guessed buying a Taurus and the stellar performance of all of mine has made me happy that I was never apprehensive. I am sorry your had issue, and hopefully they work it out, bit outside of a couple of their .22 models, I have always recommended them to others and those folks have also been satisfied. Their is no problem inclusive with Taurus that other manufacturers have as well. These forum have people that buy brand new guns, only to have them break in the first 500 rounds, this is from any manufacture from truger, smith, Springfield etc. All companies put a piece of junk out there and most companies will gladly repair it if it's on their end. I understand that you don't want to buy another Taurus because of A bad experience, but dontexpect ANY company to NEVER disappoint. My tauri are all fantastic and believe they will last for years to come.

All it takes is one really bad experience...

Ya know skizzums, that 740 Slim was my first Taurus. I was well aware of all the bad press and MAJOR split between the "love 'em" and "hate 'em" groups when Taurus is mentioned, but I did a lot of research and weighed what I found before I decided they deserved a chance at my business. Comments and experiences like yours obviously carried the day for me over the many bad experiences I saw.

And if that 740 had not busted the very first day I owned it, before I could even run two magazines through it, I would probably be singing their praises just like you. But that is NOT what happened. The gun broke before I could even tell if I liked it. And while that did not make me happy, Taurus could have very easily fixed it and made all right with the world again while keeping me as a new customer. Unfortunately, that also is NOT what happened.

The bottom line for me is that the company has shown me personally how they operate and what they think about their customers. I am not bad-mouthing a company because of an opinion or a reaction to everything I have heard from others; I am simply relaying my personal experience with one of their guns and the way I have been treated after they took my money.

I bought a new gun, owned it for one day, and now over a year later I still do not have that gun!

I used to feel that Taurus guns were just a less-expensive option to consider, but now I'm convinced they are simply cheap.

Mauser69,

If you've been waiting a year for resolution on this it's past time for a hand written snail-mail letter to whoever their CEO is in Miami.

I've found a hand written letter gets a LOT more action and attention than an email or phone call.

Just my 2p.

My 7 year old 24/7 broke. Shipped it to Miami through a dealer. Taurus picked up shipping both ways and fixed it for free. Had it back in less than 7 days.

You want to get rid of that thing when you get it back, let me know.

All the Best,
D. White

I understand. I bought a sccy, it broke on the first outing, and despite quick and kind CS, it just kept breaking. so I feel the same way, I hear people on this forum praising the reliability of their sccy, but I for one, just cannot bring myself to give them another chance. sorry for jumping to conclusions, you have ever right to write Taurus off as a "no-buy" gun. sorry for your bad experience, if a gun isn't sorted out and back in your hands within a couple of weeks, than CS failed IMO
