Taurus PT 945 finest pistol in the world?

ammo first

New member
This is a statement from one of the dealers at last weeks gun show. I'm going out on a limb here and asuming he is full of bill. (pun intended) I would however like to here from owners of this pistol, reliability etc.. I racked the slide several times and would like to know where this hammer is biting people? The hammer came know where near my shooting hand, what kind of meat hooks do you people have? Secondly what are the magazine problems you are experiencing. thanks for any replies. ammo first and last.

PT 945 the finest pistol in the world?

Wow - either he really likes them, or he really has to sell one. My guess is the latter.

I own a Taurus PT 940, which is the slightly smaller version in 40 S&W. I bought it about a year ago & have only put about 200 rounds thru it. That shouldn't be construed to mean there is something wrong or unattractive about the gun. I like it. Alloy frame & steel slide, decent sights, competitive price - my all blue version was just under $350 - and perhaps the most attractive feature, in my opinion, is the fact that you can use the safety to either drop the hammer for an initial DA trigger pull, or push it up to carry cocked & locked for a SA first shot. Within those 200 rounds, there wasn't a single FTF or FTE. At 25', it was accurate & shoots to point of aim.
I bought it on impulse. I had located brand new Browning Hi-Powers in 40 S&W for only $275.00! I called twice to be sure it was for real, then drove about 90 minutes the next morning (Saturday) only to find that they completely sold out about 1 hour before I got there! (Ouch - I still sting from that one.) They offered me a nice deal on a 9MM with the tangent sight, but I really wasn't interested.
Anyway, it was a week or so after S&W had signed the Klinton deal. This was a big sale, & the factory reps for all the major manufacturers were there - Beretta, Ruger, Taurus, S&W, etc. I was hungry to buy a gun (ever been there?) and I looked over the Taurus display. It was right next to the S&W display, and Taurus had just come out and acknowledged that they absolutely would not sign the agreement. Knowing that the S&W rep was watching me pluck money down with Taurus made it sweet - so I guess it was sort of an knee-jerk buy.
The only reason I haven't shot it is that 40 S&W ammo is still a litte more expensive than the other calibers I have to shoot. I had *a lot* of expenses last year, & spent my wad on some toys. So - the PT940 sat unused. That will probably change soon!

Uh, right. I'd always wanted one as it seems to be a great configuration at a reasonable price. Then I tried one. One mag worth and I realized I would NEVER own one of these.

"Finest pistol in the world"?

Not.

Wouldn't want to make a claim as to which one IS, but I know for certain that the Taurus is NOT.

I got alot of those responses at the gun show in charlotte this past weekend. There was a guy selling a SIG 220 two tone for $1,200!!!!!!

I asked him why so high, he said "thats a SIG, do you know what a sig is"

I had to bite, so I said "No, never heard of it" He said these are rare guns and i would never find one like it anywhere in the world and that if i wanted it today he would throw in the case/trigger lock with it. My old man was with me. He leaned over my shoulder and said "come on, he dont wanna sell any guns. he wants to keep them all"

I walked by the mans tables just before i left to see what he had sold. Everything that was there when i walked in was still there 7 hours later when i left. Seems my old man was right. That guy really didnt want to sell anything. LOL

I really like the PT-940 also. The PT-945 might be a great value, but it sounds like he got a good deal on them. Depending on the price, get one. You might really like it. I think they look great. That's a personal thing though.

I had one for a couple of weeks, and I experienced the bite that you are asking about. It is similar to the bite that many experience when shooting a 1911 with the stock grip-safety. I also get it when firing BHPs with a round, Commander style of hammer spur.

Then gun seemed to be reliable, and was accurate enough for the task. The only beef I had with the mag is the unneccessarily bulky floorplate. They should have a mag with a flush-fit plate, even at the expense of giving up the 8th round. I wouldn't pass it up if you found a good deal on one, just don't expect it to be a Sig P220.:)

Hammer bite? Magazine problems? Now you folks have really piqued my curiosity. I've been shooting my PT945 for over a year and have yet to get a hammer bite. On the other hand, I sold an FEG BHP clone for that very reason. That and I'm left-handed and putting an ambi safety on the FEG didn't look like fun.

As for magazine woes, I use the factory mag as well as 2 ProMags and 3 USA mags and the only problem I've ever had was some reloads that were a skoche too long. I now seat all 45ACP rounds .010 less than the stated max OAL.

What mag problems have other encountered?

Stay aware,
Stay safe.

Buddy,
Next time you see J. Luering ask him how he liked his PT. In the November IDPA match, the PT didn't even finish stage one. Last time I saw J.L. he was trying to get rid of that plastic piece of crap.

I had a pt940 stainless/alum. I liked it alot. It had a damn nice
trigger and was a good carry gun. I shoot a stainless 945 occasionally. It is a pretty nice gun but bites its owner. I dont have a problem with it. It is accurate and has less recoil than my
40. The trigger on the 945 has a longer pull even in s/a.
All in all pretty good. shoot well

Head Shrink Anyone?

Personally, I think someone needs to dial "911", and send
this dude (the dealer) to the hospital for an evaluation by
a qualified head shrink. :D IMO, there's no way that
any firearm's made by Taurus can lay claim that
Taurus handguns "are the best in the world".
Sounds like this dude was trying to hustle some poor,
innocent prospective buyer?

Ricky T,

Kinda hard for a PT-945 to be a "plastic piece of crap" as it's not made of plastic.

Taurus "Millenium"-series autos are made of plastic and do, indeed, seem to be pretty crappy.

The "Millenium"-series, however, has about as much in common with other Taurus autos as the Colt AA2000 does with the 1911.

PT-945 is a fine gun and a good "Poor Man's P-220". "Finest Pistol In The World", however, it most certainly is not. :)

You are right. I was wrong, I got the numbers and alphabets wrong. I was thinking of the Millenium. My apology to all the 945 owners.

The finest pistol in the world is the one you have when you need it and does what you want with no hesitation or hiccups. Brands, models, and calibers may vary.

I have to jump in and say that the PT945 is not junk. While I have only put about 200rds through my buddy's 945, I must admit the experience was quite enjoyable. He spends countless hours with it and loves it. "Finest pistol in the world?" Well now that's just silly.
