Taurus PT-145 or Glock G36?

Thinkin' about getting a small .45 for a carry gun- these two seem like good possibilities. Any advice on choosing between the two? Or on other models you'd recommend?

Speaking as a card-carrying Glock Hater:

Take the G 36. Don't look back. Don't regret it.

If you take the Taurus, you can look back or not, as you wish. Regretting it will happen either way.

Alternatives? 1911 (Kimber) works for some, The Sig P245 might for others, the HK is good but fat, and after that, aside from the one I know I've completely forgotten, it's downhill.

Hummer,
Do a search on the PT-145. Many are experiencing frame cracks. I have one NIB that I haven't even fired yet. Don't know if I ever will. Until Taurus address the frame issue, get the Glock.

From all the negative word of mouth on this board, the choice would have to be the Glock 36. No brainer on that one! ;)

Im a Taurus fan but I can tell you DONT GET THE POLYMER TAURUS pistols. They're having all kinds of problems as of lately. Ask denfoote. Im sure he'll be posting here shortly. Do the search and you'll see commentary as well as photos of the defects. Get the Glock if thats what you want. Theres also the Witness and the Charles Daly DDA if your on a money crunch. I think Im gonna hold out till I can go to the dark side. (Glock) Just trying to decide on the G30 or 36.

I'm just the one you want to talk to!!:) I am the soon to be former owner of a brand new Taurus PosT-145. I bought one. I was really tanked up on it!! I shot sub two inch groups at 25 yards with it!!!! After only 650 rounds, the frame cracked!! The reason I was flirting with this POS was the fact that my Glock 30 was to fat for my hand. While at my FFL's store one day, I chanced to see a G36 in the case. Well, to make a long story short, I traded my G30 for the G36 and I haven't looked back!!:D The G36 is better than my old G30. It probably is the most versitle Glock made. It is a major caliber and is small enough to be carried in all of the standard modes. Personally I carry mine in a Bianchi Black Widow pancake, but I also have a Kydex IWB, a pocket, and an ankle holster that fit it!! I have used all of the above to carry the G36. Moreover, I shoot what are essentally single hole double taps at 12-15 yards. BTW, when my "new" PosT-145 gets back from Taurus, It is going to my gunsmith as payment for an Alchmey Arms 3.5lb connector and reduced power trigger spring, and a set of Heinie Straight Eight night sights. :) :) :) Forget about the 145!! Get the G36!!!!!!:D

To pollute the plastic minds, what about a Colt Officer's model/Defender, a small Kimber, a Para P10 or something similar? If left to your two choices, its glock all the way based on what I've seen here about the PT-145. Have you looked at the G30? I know the gunrags fell over themselves to say how great the G36 was, but the G30 really isn't that much thicker, and you have many more mag capacity options, including a pre-ban G21 mag as a reload.

I had a PT145, and was really impressed, esp. since it was my first experience with a .45, until.......
yep, the frame cracked.

Interestingly, mine cracked above the trigger, just behind the roll pin. My dealer said it was the third gun they had shipped back, all cracked in the same place. (Has anybody else had a crack over the trigger guard?)

My dealer shipped it, and let Taurus pick up the shipping.
Got it back in 3 weeks, let the dealer keep it and ordered a Kahr MK 9.

I've not given up on Taurus, and I am hoping that in a year or so they will have this problem fixed. Unfortunately, the fix may take it out of the unique size/power envelope that this gun has to itself right now.

In the mean time, I'm looking forward to the MK9, and I'll still use Glock as the benchmark for my "plastic" guns.

i'm totally soured on taurus at this point. luckily, my dealer took my cracked frame POS PT145 back and gave me full credit. i like my p226 a little better. :D

I like the PT-145 except for the frame crack thing. It's been a thorn. Don't know much about the G36 except it holds 6 rounds. If you still want the compact size with a full 10 rounds, check out the Charles Daly DDA. I have one and it shoots great. I just sent my PT145 back to taurus. If you want, I'll sell you the one they send back. $250 sound reasonable?

I am not a Glock fan (comparative accuracy), but I do appreciate their many virtues and I own a G36. Given the alternatives cited in your post, the decision is easy: buy the Glock 36!

Awhile ago I too was considering a Taurus P-140 but got a Glock 27 instead! The P-140 is a good idea, but it felt cheap in my hand especially when I pulled the trigger. Then it felt and sounded like a toy gun! I asked about the Taurus on various message boards and found out many were unhappy with them. The Glock 27 was my first Glock, since I have added a 19 and 26!
The 36 is high on my list for the next one. If Taurus will improve the quality, they may have a winner. But not yet!

I hate to agree....but

I had a PT-145 and really liked it. For a platic framed gun, it really was comfortable to shoot and was pretty accurate. I was so pumped about the aesthetics and the write up in the magazine about how great the gun was compared to the compact Glock in size and shootability.

I half-heartedly traded it in towards a Sig P-239 in .357 Sig. Mainly for the slimer frame of the Sig and for the caliber. Like many have posted before me, there have been a lot of frames cracking in the same spot. I was fortunate to not have had this happen, but then again, I did not shoot many rounds through it, and did not really look hard for any cracks.

I've also had a problem with a Taurus Model 44 when the cylinder fell out of my gun fully loaded with 44 Magnum rounds. That's left a negative lasting impression on me which is ashame because Taurus has really tried making it's own name for itself by introducing new designs unique to Taurus and not S & W and Berretta. As nice as the "lifetime guarantee" is, that will do you no good if an assailant is upon you and you try to go "bang" and instead you get any of the three Cs....."click" "crack" "oh crap"

You're better off spending the extra $150.00 and getting the Glock.

Hope this helps.

While I'm not a big G36 fan, it is a Glock. Tuff as nails and drives tacks usually.

although the G36 is a kicker.

But its thin and light and in 45 ACP, that a yummy flavor.

As said before, mixed reviews on the PT-145.

They have terrible feeling triggers. Those Brazilians must have assembled them on the beach!

Glock and don't look back.

Almost the same size and lots of cops use the G36 as a duty back up and an off duty gun themselves.

I have not even shot my Taurus PT 145 yet, but I just have something about Glock's that I don't like. It may be pure emotional I don't know. I like some of the guns that others do not care for. Colt Pocket Nine etc. I am a skilled trades person so making adjustments to a mechanical objects are routine. The only gun I have had to make adjustments to was a Kel Tek P32, Poor quality control. But I agree that when you buy a product it should work right the first time. How many times has that happened. It does not matter what industry you talk about production numbers are the key.
