Taurus PT-111 Millennium -- Good CCW or piece of ...

I had the opportunity to attend the south Florida Family Shooting Expo this week-end which was held near my home town. A number of firearm companies (such as Glock, HK, Kimber, North American Arms, Rossi, etc.) were there and we had the opportunity to fire any gun that was there.

I shot the Taurus Raging Bull with full power .454 rounds and it was really a handful. My hat goes off to anyone who can shoot this round accurately with any handgun. I also shot the Taurus Millennium in both 9mm (PT-111) and .40S&W (PT-140).

They shot pretty good at the range, but then again, I only put one magazine through each (the cost to test fire any of the guns was $5 a clip/cylinder). I'm thinking about getting one since they are only slightly larger than my Kahr MK40 but with twice the rounds and I especially like the fact that even though they are DAO, they also have a manual safety which no other gun maker offers.

However, I've read a lot of really bad things about the Millennium guns on the Web. Does anyone have any experience with them? Either positive or negative.

Don't bother. It's a POS from what I have heard, But that is just second hand comming from me. On the other hand, the Kahr you have in your hand is an excellent weapon. Why chase after Yugos when you have a BMW sitting right in your driveway? :)

Just as there is no such thing as too much fun,
there is no such thing as owning just one gun!!!

Off my meds (quit smoking), armed to the teeth, and loose on an unsuspecting society!!!

POS. Save your money for a Kahr E9 for $275 used, a Glock 26/27 for $379 used, a Sig P228 used for $400. Lots of good guns just save your money and rent/borrow until you can buy the one you'll keep!

My PT 111 has never missed a beat and when it does I will tell you. I say if Bill Ruger built a small compact it would look like a PT 111. I like the little pistol but I have heard of problems with the takedown lever. Regards, Richard.

Take down for the little gun is complicated, and its difficult for some to shoot, as the trigger is very heavy.

There have been a lot of complaints on other forums about the gun, but these are probably the "Teething" problems that many new guns go through.

Personally, I prefer the Kel-Tec P11 -- a design upon which the PT-111 is clearly based. The PT-11 is a more mature design, and the bugs have been worked out. It will accept S&W 12 and 15 round mags (from the '69 or '59 series pistols), and is very sturdy and reliable. Take down is easy.

Most importantly, its anywhere from $75-$100 less costly. Check out www.ktog.org.

FUD, do a search in the archives for the PT-111, many good threads there. I have one, and I only recently got it back from the factory due to major accuracy problems. It seems to be hit or miss with quality with these little things, and I've seen more junkers than gems recently.

FUD, well, I have to admit, I shoot my Raging Bull at 100 yds. at an 8" steel plate and head the gong about 95% ofthe time...especially with hot Hornady loads. Dont' be that impressed, though, because it's just in the getting to know the gun. The more you shoot it, the less it seems to recoil. Anyway, my wife had a PT-111 for about 3 months (about 70 rounds) and we got rid of it. Taurus revo's work well, but not the 'lil autos.

Hello; I agree with other poster's; it is a
piece of raw sewage. Spend that hard earned
money on something worthwhile such as a Sig,
Glock, H&K, or a Kahr. Gee Whiz, even a Ruger, or a Smith & Wesson Tactical. Don't
settle for anything less.

I had a Millennium PT-111 and had nothing but trouble. It would jam/fail to eject about every magazine. On my second trip to the range the slide jammed shut after firing and failed to eject! No one there could get the slide back. I sent it to Taurus and within a couple of weeks got it back with a note saying they fixed it and test fired it. After being "fixed" it had a feed/ejection problem about every third round (too bad they didn't say what their "test firing" results were). After getting it worked on by a local smith, the problems were down to about every 50 rounds. At this point I sold it and bought a Glock 27. I can't recommend the Millennium!

I must be one of the lucky ones then. My PT-111 is great. Never had a flaw with it. I've only had mine about 6 months, but I've put about 1000 rounds through it already.

I *owned* a PT-111 for several months too.
Sold it and happy I did.
1. Long, stiff trigger pull

2. Pain in the butt to put back together after field stripping

3. Jammed about 1-2 times every box of ammo (didn't matter what I fed it)

4. It was a Taurus! What was I thinking?

Invested the $250 cash I sold it for plus some savings in a Sig Sauer 239 and we're talking a difference of heaven and hell!

What do these Taurus Millennium cost? Say they go for $250 (plus tax) and you unfortunately have to ship it to Taurus for repair. That will set you back another $50 for UPS Next Day Air (unless you use an FFL and use USPS but then you'll have to pay him a fee). Now you're up to $300. For that kind of money you can buy two very good Bulgarian Makarovs ($140 shipping inlcuded from Dan's Sporting Goods--400 5th St.---New Kensinton, PA 15068---Ph# (724) 727-2648
dansportammo@alltel.net) or you can hold off a little while longer and get a higher quality pistol.

So many pistols, so little money.

I originally asked this question not because of the cost factor since I already own a Micro Kahr (the BMW in the driveway), but because of the external safety which only Taurus seems to have on their DAO pistols. Having carried traditional S&W pistols, I still haven't fully adjusted to DAO pistols without a safety. Of course, if Kahr would introduce a model with a 1911 style safety, I wouldn't have even asked this question originally (anyone at Kahn listening?).

I have had my pt-111 for over 6 months now and have put about 1000 throught it and no problems whatsoever. I do not like the long trigger pull, but I do like the safety. Its not my cc gun, but it nice to take to the range and let my non gun owning friends fire it.

Havent had any problems with mine, very reliable...get the magizine extender, feels like a biggin...but so small.Lifetime garuntee also!!

I have had a PT-111 for about a year and
a half and I've not had any problems with
mine. For the few complaining about field
stripping this gun, about it being hard,
you've got to be kidding me, what do you
want to hit a button and the gun field strip
itself for you? If you have bad thoughts
about a particular brand of gun then you
shouldn't even try one of them because you
will always have bad thoughts,regardless.
