Taurus OSS Misfire DA

I bought a lightly used Taurus 24/7 OSS in 9mm. The gun is a pleasure to shoot and very accurate.

That being said, it consistently misfires in DA. I have run about 300 rounds through it and it does not misfire in SA. The DA misfires will sometimes go off on the second try, third try or not at all. I have tried 6 different types of ammunition and they all misfire.

I took the firing pin out and thoroughly cleaned and lubed the action.

Here is what I find strange. The primers on the misfired rounds are dented and look like the fired case primers. Further, I put a pencil in the barrel and fired the gun in both SA and DA. The DA pulls shoot the pencil further than the SA pulls. I repeated the test 5 times and am convinced the DA pulls exert more force on the pencil.

I have heard of light strike misfires. Is it possible to misfire it the primer is struck too hard?

Never heard of that, but it is also hard to believe the DA strikes harder than SA if the hammer doesn't go back as far. It may be you grip the gun harder to work it double-action so that your muscle tension assists the thing going forward? I don't know your test setup, obviously.

Is this happening with commercial ammo or with reloads? If it is reloads, then you want to be sure the primers are firmly in place. Even the slightest amount of primer failure to seat all the way will absorb firing pin energy and can fail to fire. Switch to Federal primers and see if they give you the same problem? They often are the only ones weaker mainsprings in tuned revolvers will fire consistently.

If it is commercial ammo, try a different brand. If that does it, too, I would contact Taurus and let them take care of it.

It happened with 4 different types of commercial and 2 commercial reloads.

I don't think it is my grip, I have shot Taurus DA for years.

Here is a picture of an unfired casing.

I may end up sending it in for repairs, but I would prefer to DIY or maybe have a local(Akron) gunsmith work on it.
