Taurus M44SS6 Report

Picked up my Taurus M44SS6 yesterday. Just wanted to pass on a few observations.

This handgun is as good or better than any S&W I've owned. Out of the box single action trigger MIGHT be a shade less smooth than my last 629, but not by much. Lockup is tight. Fit, finish, sights, and grips are excellent. A nice touch is the rounded cylinder release. Not wild about the vent rib, by my understanding is it's primary function is as a platform to mount a scope base, something I won't do.

Accuracy is excellent. From the bench, groups (with failing light) were under
3" at 25 yards, using a load of 17.0 grain of 2400 and a 240 grain Laser Cast Flat Point. The last 10 shots as it got dark put 7 dead on inside of 1.75", with 3 opening it up to a shade over 3 inches as I lost the front sight. I anticipate ragged one hole groups as I get more used to the gun.

Full house factory Federal 240 grain JHP groups from the bench were right around 3". Double action at 12.5 yards with this ammo was easily kept in the head of a TQ-21 target, and the group could be covered with my hand.

The muzzle porting really cuts down on the muzzle jump and recoil. The above 17 grain 2400 load was very easy to control & pleasant to shoot, comparable to shooting my Glock duty weapon in 40 S&W. The full house loads were reminiscent of shooting 357 Mag 125 grain Federal duty ammo out of a 4" S&W L frame.

All in all, I'm extremely satisfied with the Taurus M44...

I dig Taurus too ... don't really understand the hate on them , but personally I think it's unfounded.

I just picked up a couple weeks ago a Taurus 608 - 8 shot .357

I compared it to the S&W "8 times" and there simply was no comparison.

Trigger action alone negated the S&W at over twice the price. It didn't look or feel any better , was actually a little lighter and Out of Box was unusable DA. The Taurus trigger is about as close to perfect as I've ever felt from an OutoBox gun. Smooth as silk , double action pull ... single action ALMOST too light. (I admit , at the range I popped one off bringing my finger down on the trigger not exactly ready to fire. but pointed down range)

Solid lock up cylinder to barrel alignment perfect visually.

I shot a few hundred rounds of various ammo through it and am extremely pleased with it. Very easy to get accustomed to the gun for tight groups at 25yards ... and very manageable recoil.

I'd definately buy one again.

I recently (about a week ago maybe) did a "range report" on a Taurus M44SS4 that I recently got. I really liked it as well. Now, I'll go ahead and admit that I am still more of an S&W guy, but that doesn't mean that I'm not open to other possibilities. I still haven't really gotten a chance to check the accuracy of mine though, something I hope to do soon. It did seem to be hitting a little low though, but that could've been the ammo I was using, and besides that could be fixed by adjusting the sites.

I also agree about the DA and SA trigger pulls. The double action is near perfect on mine. The SA is really too light for my liking.

Petre- I had the EXACT same experience when I shot this gun. I shot it the first time, cocked it again, had it pointed down range but wasn't ready to shoot again, and BANG it went off. With a .44 that is quite shocking. It really kinda rattled me. Never happened to me before. But it was a good lesson as I seriously doubt I will ever make the same mistake with the gun again.

With the Model 44, when my dad was shooting it, the back crease on the grip "bit" him every time he shot it. He said after a few rounds it became pretty painful. I didn't experience this. Have any of you? I know it really kind of turned him off to the gun.

Dallas, get him a pair of Uncle Mike's Handgun Shooting Gloves. They are made for shooting big bore handguns, and really do the job. They have open finger tips, a padded palm/web area, and are extended on the second finger to protect it from being bruised by the trigger guard. I carry mine on a pouch on my gunbelt...

Thanks for the suggestion. I think the next time I take him to shoot it, I'll let him use a pair of my gloves (just a pair of fairly thick leather gloves that I cut the trigger finger out of, not fancy, but I think it'll get the job done). It'll probably be awhile before I get him to go out with it again though, he is a self-proclaimed "long gun" man, and I have trouble getting him to shoot my pistols with me. In fact, the only pistol he has owned since I've been alive at least is a his Super Blackhawk. Which, actually I don't enjoy shooting a lot without the glove because the trigger guard smacks my middle finger. He says he doesn't experience this...go figure.

dallasconundrum ... yep , it was shocking enough with the heavy .357mag load I had in it ... I can't imagine that with the 44 load :D

It happened once and it won't happen again.

Light triggers are nice , but they sure keep you on your toes.:p

I have a Raging Bull in .44 :) I really like the moderm look of this pistol...

ported heavy barrel basically eliminates muzzle flip (it still kicks back), the trigger is great making it a very accurate pistol. One this I'm not so happy about is the grip size; is DA it's quite a reach :( (I might get Houge grips for it some day)

but over all it's a great gun
