Taurus M44 Magnum. Deal or No Deal?

Hello everyone new to the forums and to the Pistol/Revolver scene and got a question for y'all. I got a call from a friend of mine that wants to sell me a Taurus M44 Mag. 6", Misc. ammo (80 rounds) and a bianchi holster (Not sure model) all for $450. All I know about the pistol is that it is slightly used. Think he said less than 100 rounds through it. I've researched it some online and come up with a lot of negative comments about Taurus but not so much this model. A lot of people say that it is poor craftsmanship and material used to make these. I was wondering what everyone thinks about this model and whether it would be a good purchase or not.

is Magna Ported, and does it have any mechanical problems, any particular reason why your buddy is selling it?, cuz guns are a lot like cars some are lemons and some aren't, and even though Taurus has some QC problems, some of their guns work just as good as a Ruger, Colt, S&W ect., but i would want to shoot it and do the TFL revolver checklist on the M44 before i buy.

He said it does have a Mag-na-ported barrel and that there are currently no issues with it. He said he got it new and fired bout 100 rounds through it without any failures or hiccups. Him and his dad buy sell and trade firearms as a little side business and just one of the many guns he's trying to sell. I'm meeting with him today and can give it a test run be4 the final purchase.
 
well that's good to know Hartsocks, the Magnaporting will reduce the recoil, although it will make it a whole lot louder, and also you get to try it before you buy it, now is $450 worth it?, well if you like the M44 then it is IMHO, but in the end it will come down to if you think it's worth $450.
 
I have a Taurus M44SS6. That is the stainless one with the 6.5" factory ported barrel. I happened into a deal on mine and got it for $350 used. It is a 2008 model. It didn't come with anything extra, though.

I carry it loaded with Hunting Shack "Bear Loads" when I am hunting, especially bowhunting in the high country in eastern Idaho by Yellowstone. That is what I bought it for.

I am sure that the usual suspects will be by soon to tell you that Tauruses are not any good. I have had my M44 for a couple of years and put about 800 rounds of various loads through it. Mine is accurate and reliable.
 
With current state of ammo I would buy it to get the 80 rounds:D.If you like it I think that is a fair price
 
A late friend had a blued Taurus .44 Mag, and liked it - but he also didn't shoot it very much in the 3-4 years he owned it prior to his passing.

OTOH, I used to shoot my .44 Ruger SBH & S&W M-29 almost weekly (we both were members of the same gun club, and used to go hunting & shooting together)

So, mayhaps he just didn't care for the recoil of the .44 Taurus - I can't remember if it was ported or not, but I don't think it was.

I had one in stainless it was a great gun, I wish I had never let a guy talk me into selling it to him. with that said if it was made back in 08 or before I would try it and if all seems well I would buy it. if it was manufactured after about 08 I would be really leary of it as every taurus product I have purchased after that time frame has been junk. had 2 returned to taurus and both came back with the same defects I sent them in for. will never buy another.
 
Taurus has a well deserved reputation for poor quality and poor customer service. With that said, they can make some good guns but you just never know which one you'll end up with.

If you want it buy it, resale might be poor if you decide to sell it, but it might end up being a decent gun for a good price. It might also be a hell of a headache.

The question is, are you willing to take a chance on it?
 
I think I sold mine for that much in the same condition a few years back for cash to fund another purchase. I'd buy another one without hesitation if I was in the market for a .44. Very accurate at longer ranges, and a lot of fun to shoot.
 
I worry that the 44 magnum may be a bit too much gun to start out with in the "pistol/revolver scene" unless you have some big bore experience.

I think it's a fair price if you like the way it shoots. You won't likely sell it and make any money. Good luck with your decision.
 
Hey, apologies bout not getting back to you guys sooner been having to much fun with it! I've taken it out a few times already put couple boxes of 240gr. through it without any issues. Nice looking and very manageable. The porting does make it A lot louder compared to friends Ruger Redhawk. But so far very pleased and would definately make the purchase again! Thank you everyone for the feedback and comments!!
