Howdy Folks !

I looked at a used 44 MAG TAURUS M44 w/a 4 inch bbl.(approx. 350 bucks) Can anybody please advice as to the gun's performance and reliability or point me to a web site?
Also is this a fairly newer model?

I am trying to take the step up from a 357 to a 44 if that is an appropriate progression.

Thanks to all of you in advance for taking the time to read this and offer an opinion if you so choose AND have a SAFE SHOOT !!

For that price you should be able to find a Ruger. Maybe $50 higher. I have never owned a Taurus because it says "Made in Brazil" and it just doesn't look right to me.

COASTER,

Good morning. I personally love the .44 magnum and think that stepping up from the .357 to .44 magnum is the correct progression. I actually have the Taurus Model 44 Hunter in 12 inch. It has held up to a lot of Factory loads as well as my handloads that are within SAAMI pressure. I think that if you keep the gun loaded with Factory loadings and ignore the specialty hunting ammunition, you should get a long service life out of this gun. That having been said, I do think a Ruger or even a Model 29 S&W would do you better all around. The Ruger will be closer to the price you have indicated and would last longer. You would also be able to experiment with the full range of .44 magnum loads. Good luck, have a great day, and let us know what you get!

I have a model 44 with 6 in barrel, only put 100 rounds thru it and love it. I also have a smith 14-3 so I know what a nice trigger feel like and think the Taurus has a better trigger then I thought it would. SA is very light and DA is nice and smooth. If you can keep from flinching :o then it will hit what you aim at. All and all.............I'm very happy and don't feel bad for saving the additional bucks to buy the other brands that I'm sure are worth the money.

I got mine new for just over 4 hundred out the door so I think 350 is not to bad if in good condition with few rounds.

I own a Taurus Tracker 44 in stainless 4" barrel. Revolver shoots fine
and I,m pleased with it . Only 50 or 60 rounds through her so far . Gun is brand new. I,m up in northern N.Y. so kinda waiting till gun range melts snow off so I can invest more time with gun at range.
I,ve have large hands and sometimes rear of trigger houseing spanks my middle finger so I plan to change grips.
Hougue will be into production for grips on this model in roughly 30 days per. their e-mail back to me.
Best of luck on your choices for your revolver.

Forgot website.

Go to www.gunblast.com and look in archives for Taurus Tracker 44.
Thinking may have been Nov/2004 coverage by Jeff .
Oh' I paid $400 for gun . Traded a 41 mag Ruger also against the $400..

44

A 44 is my next wheel gun....... I will look at a Taurus as well. They make some nice firearms and fair priced. Just because it is made in another country has nothing to do with it. The Italian's, German's, Russian's, Czech's and Belgian's make guns too........ I think that some models they make are great too.

I like the 44 because for a hunting handgun it just seems to fit the spot super well. Best of luck on your quest........for the 44.

I want to thank each of you for your response. I will certainly post-- on what I end up doing as far as the M44
Safe Shoot !! :)

I own 2 Taurus 44 magnum Model 44`s.Both of them are excellent shooters.I bought the 6" new and the 4" used at a gun show for $275.I will buy another gun that says Made in Brazil butt I will buy nothing that says Made in China!!! I`m sure you will like the Taurus M-44 if you get it.At least it`s made in South AMERICA.

Taurus and Brazil...get the M44

Alot of receivers are made south of here.

Springfield has there 1911 frames made down there.
Smith had there frames made down there.
FN/Browning has had factories there as well.

Taurus large frame revolvers are actually quite well made, but, they are not as forgiving as others. (Ruger being the most well built revolver, IMHO)

My one critque would be to get ready to clean those ports on the muzzle break.
I have a 608SS4 (same frame as the M44) and I use Flitz for cleanup.

Those ports on the barrel do tend to clog up with lead...plated/jacketed bullets don't have as much of a problem.
