Taurus Grips on J-Frame

I just made a discovery. A fantastic discovery!

A few minutes ago I received new rubber compact boot grips from Taurus for my 1995 model 85 .38. I ordered them for my old gun because I consider them to be the best grips currently on the market for a 5-shot revolver. They enclose the revolver's backstrap so that shooters with average sized men's hands can have proper trigger reach and natural gun pointing and sight alignment. Yet, they do not extend below the bottom of the grip frame making them very compact.

What's better is, when I remove the stockpin on my S&W Model 49 or 640-1, the Taurus grips fit either one perfectly too! For $15 each, my Smiths will be wearing Taurus grips.

Could you do me a favor.

I asked the opposite once. I wanted to know if I could use S&W J-frame grips on my Taurus 605. Most people didn't know, the rest said no. Could you try the Smith grips on the Taurus and let me know? I wouldn't be surprised though if the Taurus grips work on the Smith and not the other way around.

Most will work. The only difference is that the Smith's stock pin is more or less centered, while the Tauruses is off center. With grips that fully enclose the grip frame you don't even need a stock pin at all.

Taurus J frame grips, how about wood?

Hi hankrearden2000,

Yes, its nice to know Taurus grips also fit S&W J frames. Its also worth knowing that old fashioned wood grips may be good. too.

Two years back I ordered a 9 shot 22LR model 94 expecting the handsome Brazilian hardwood grips shown in all their ads. The look matched a S&W 22/32 Kitgun I owned years ago. When I picked up the revolver at the dealer it had rubber grips supplied by the factory. The dealer said I could exchange them for wood by writing Taurus. That was true, but it took a while for Taurus to agree that my request was reasonable. They thought the rubber grips were an improvement I should be happy with and I insisted that all the handguns I ever owned had wood grips and so should this one. When the wood grips arrived I had the traditional pistol I really wanted. Rubber might be needed to tame recoil on a 357 but not on a 22LR.

I had to ask them twice to send me wood grips. That paid off, they ended up sending me two sets of wood grips. I'm holding the second set to put on my daughter's 85 snubby. She finds the original rubber grips inadequate to absorb recoil. The wood grips are full size and fill the hand without adding bulk to the pistol.

Consider a set of wood grips for your J frame, whether Taurus or custom made. You may be surprised at how good they feel.

Nuttin wrong with drillin properly located stock pin holes in the grips. Then they would be universal between the two even if they don't wrap around the frame.

Thanks Herb. But, I've got an entire dresser drwer full of k and J-frame grips, both wood and synthetic. I even have the stock wood grips that came on my Taaurus Model 85. I prefer synthetics.

Well Sam, you could but, you would have to drill nearly all the way through the grip due to the length of that S & W stockpin.
