Friend had 22 wmr case failure shooting 992. The base of the decimated case almost took his thumb off non dominant hand. The other shells were normal when loaded. Any thoughts?

Don't use that brand of ammo any more.

Contact the maker and tell them what happened, provide them with the lot# on the box (somewhere) and if they want it back, send it back. They should, at the least, replace the defective ammo, and may do more than that.

Rimfire rounds sometimes do blow out at the rim /head. Rare but it does happen, I had it happen with a Rem .22LR ages ago when I was young and dumb(er) and didn't report it to Rem.

I'm not very familiar with the Taurus 992, does it have recessed chambers for the case rims? S&Ws do. but even with recessed chambers, the gas has to go somewhere. Your friend was lucky, and a good example why I don't put any part of my hands in line with the cylinder, front or rear.

Do check the gun for damage. Its not likely, but not impossible.
