Taurus 85UL Range Report

Picked up another NIB 85UL friday. This one is the alum/ss and the finish is very nice. Took it to the range saturday. Put 80rds of Ga Arms 158gr LSWC and 15rds of 158gr FMJ (to clean the lead out) thru the pistol. Trigger is very good and better than my S&W J frames. Accuracy was to POA and good. I was concerned about the light DA trigger pull causing light strikes but no problem and reliability was 100%. I didn't gauge the cyl gap but I had no powder residue on the outside front of the cyl after shooting if that is any indication. The stock rubber grips absorbed recoil well but after returning home I put the rosewood boot grips on the little 85 and it looks real nice! This is my third Taurus revolver and I have had no quality problems whatsoever. I don't like Taurus politics (just kidding) :p but this revolver is a keeper.

Ditto here...........

Tom: I also have a Taurus M85 Ultralite with the black finish and bought Taurus' rosewood boot grips for it. Same-o here......the gun is a sweet shooter and easy to handle, isn't it? I for one do not agree with a lot of shooters out there that a snubby is hard to shoot. I have NOOOOO problem shooting them accurately. The cylinder-to-forcing cone gap on Taurus revolvers is fairly snug, which gives the projectile a little more ooomph. Personally, I think the quality on Taurus revolvers is right up there with other manufacturers. Can't say the same about certain of their semi-autos, though.

I also shoot Georgia Arms and particularly like their 110 gr PLUS-P gold dot JHP's........hot stuff with very light recoil. It groups a little high with the 158 gr swc's, right on the money with 125 gr SJHP's, and just a little low with the 110 gr.

No kidding.......

JrBobdobbs: I like being within driving distance of the Georgia Arms factory in Villa Rica. Makes it easy to drop by and load up.

I am, thus far, very pleased with all the Georgia Arms ammo I've tried. The .357 mag 125 gr SJHP's are some of the stoutest standard pressure rounds I've ever shot.

My son uses GA Arms exclusively in his H&K .40 cal USP compact.

Have you noticed a lot of muzzle flash with the 110 gr PLUS-P gold dot JHP's? Pretty impressive muzzle and gap flash.

Best wishes.........

Rosewood Grips

Just got off the phone placing an order with Eagle grips for a set of their rosewood Secret Service grips for the 85UL Police I picked up in trade yesterday. It will be interesting to compare them to the Taurus brand rosewoods.

How do wood grips compare to the original rubber as far as comfort? I should have one of these waiting for me when I get home for the summer, with both types. I don't want my first experience to be one of pain and bloody palms.... :p

To me, the wood grips are not as comfortable as the stock rubber grips, but they're not at all uncomfortable, either. They do conceal better (no gripping on clothes), and certainly look better.

22lovr: Yep, I shoot Ga Arms in all of my centerfire guns, all the time. Except my Makarovs; can't beat cheap Russian ammo. I make the drive a few times a year, when my gunshow buying isn't enough.

For Comfort

Its hard to beat the Taurus stock rubber grips. They are bigger and cover the backstrap and absorb recoil. For shooting 38spl even in J frames the wooden grips are fine for me. In rubber I prefer the UM Boot Grips. I just like the looks and feel of them. I replaced the Hogue Bantums on my S&W 340 with the Uncle Mikes. For overall beauty the C. Spegel bootgrip is tops in my book.

RE: Taurus rosewood grips

I switched to the factory Taurus rosewood grips to make the gun a little slicker in the pocket for easier draw/presentation. I'll have to admit that Taurus does make the best rubber boot grips for a snubby that I have, thus far, tried. The wood grips do not cover the backstrap like the stock rubber ones and the grip ergonomics move forward just slightly, but not enough to seriously affect accuracy. I am also impressed with the fit/finish and quality of the Taurus rosewood grips. I didn't quite know what to expect and was pleasantly surprised.
