Taurus 85 Ultra lite

I ordered a Taurus 85BULPRL today for self defense. My first wheelgun purchase in a while.

I had planned on using a recently purchased Bersa Thunder for summer carry, but it jammed up so bad the first time I took it to the range, I'm not trusting it.

My question is, does anyone have experience with this model? I'm not questioning the Taurus quaility. (One of my best and reliable shooters is my PT-92SS5) I'm just looking for information about how the 85BULPRL shoots and carries.

Many thanks

What are you going to pay for it?

I've been looking at these guns, and it seems like the Taurus revolvers are heavier than the Airweight S&Ws, but are the same price.

I looked at the Taurus website again and have no clue how they weigh things. They have all Ti guns weighing less than Ti/alloy ones.

How much does this Ultralite weigh?

Hey,

Your my gun-tech hero! I read all your posts, and I've learned allot about guns from them! Keep writing...

I carry a Taurus 85 ultra-lite when I need something a bit more concealable than my Colts.

Its pretty accurate for a snubby, action is smooth, trigger is crisp, timing and lockup are dead on, fit and finish are fantastic - damn good value for the money.

We weighed a couple of Smith's yesterday at work on a shipping meter; and here are the results:

Smith & Wesson 642 = 0.92

Smith & Wesson 340PD = 0.77

I'm not quite sure how to to convert this to ounces, but this is the actual
weight registered for these two weapons.

Best Wishes,

Yeah, I know about the price. My dealer is a little high, but I find if he's around $50 difference, the price at the point of sale is about the same. Or, at least not enough to make me not want to purchase locally.

And, you're right again, I do want those pearl grips. I'm 69, and I've never owned a gun with pearl grips, and gold do-hingies.

Handy, can you explain some of that in lay terms. I lose you after 1lb. = 16oz.'s.

Good for you !....many fine reasons to support your local dealer....it would be tragic if the small neighborhood retailer completeiy disapeared giving way to only faceless internets sales. As for pearl grips and gold "bling"...why not, your worth it !...you only live once ! Please keep us posted as to your impressions once your fine little revolver arrives.

-regards

I own both a S&W model 36 and a Taurus 85 UL. They both shoot equally well and are both great for instintive point and shoot. I put Crimson Trace laser grips on the Model 85 and find them of little advantage except for training someone about their deficiencies in pulling of a double action shot.

Bullrock,

That was just the formula for converting a percentage of pound (.92 lbs.) into another unit, namely ounces, which come in at 16 per pound. Ala Dan seemed to be curious.

Could you comment on why you chose a heavier Taurus over a lighter S&W for about the same money? Do you believe the Taurus superior?

I went with the Taurus over a S&W mainly becouse I honestly couldnt see any difference in the quality - they were equals from every aspect that I could determine while standing at the counter (I handled and inspected a vast multitude of various snubbies before making the choice) - but it was the lower price of the Taurus that tipped the scales in favor of them for me at least. (I only paid 250 bucks for my Taurus 85 ultra-lite).

I decided to go with a small wheelgun for summer carry after a not so pleasant experience with several small automatics. I live in the country, so try before you buy is not readily available to me.

I have owned a Taurus Tracker .357. I really liked that gun, but I traded it for a smaller SW66 which I still have. I also own a PT-92 and a Millenium Pro 9mm, so I don't have any problem with Taurus Quality.

I guess I selected the Taurus because it is prettier, and I was willing to give up 2 little ounces for those pearl grips, and gold do-hingings. Price was also a factor. I'm buying the Taurus for $349.00. The MRSP on the SW637 is $695 with the laser sights, which I don't need. And, consider I'm purchasing for seasonal carry only. Next winter I can have my Taurus as a desk gun or a paper weight, because it's so pretty.

I do not believe the Taurus is superior to S&W. Taurus quality is OK for me. I've owned and enjoyed SW wheelguns for many years, only because I couldn't afford a Colt Python. And, one of my best, years ago, was the Ruger SA 6. So I guess it's just a personal preference thing, if you know what I mean...

Thanks for the help...

i've recently got back into wheel guns. At a funshow i ended up with a SP101 3", which my wife liked even more. Next show a GP100 followed me home and i was hooked and dangling on the line. The SP101 was a 38+P and the only thing missing was i wanted 357. My Chief Financial Officer told to find one. She didn't have to tell me twice. Off to the arms bazaar. I was doing some serious looking and thinking on the SP101, 2 1/4, 357 and i tried to get the dealer to come down a little. He asked if i had looked at the Smith snubby because Taurus was hurting them and he had $65 off the Smith. I've owned both the Smith and Taurus, they are nice, lighter in weight, but they do not do for me what the Ruger does. BTW, the Ruger SP101 is tied with my 1911 Colt, and it's still gaining ground. Go figure, the little guy is very reassuring "as my go every where companion."

go with the taurus. i purchaes an m85ul a few months ago and i love it. i guess my wife loved it more though, as she claimed it for herself.

we've never had any problems or malfunctions with the gun. we did change the grips about a month ago though, had a problem getting speed loaders to drop free cause they were catching on the grip.

My Police Deparment that I work for issues them as our back ups. The One I got is a few years old and works great. There is some wear on the frame long time ankle carry, but mechanically works fine. I prefer a revolver as a back up. I know it will go bang every time.

I picked up my new Taurus 85BULPRL today, and if it shoots as good as it looks and feels, it's a keeper.

It's very well balanced, the action feels great, and dry firing this little sucker tells me I'm going to like shooting it tomorrow.

When I opened up the box at the dealers, this little gun drew some attention from men and women. I call it my pimp gun with the black frame, pearl grips and the gold do-hingies.

Thanks for all of the help, and information in helping make this purchase.

[smilies don't work] [big smile]
