Taurus 85 .38 Special Question

Hi,

I just purchased a "new" Taurus 85 SS 2" ported barrel .38 special. The model number on the box is 2-850029C. It does not have the Taurus security system on it. Does anyone know what year this gun was manufactured & if it will take +P ammo? Thanks for the help!

I don't know much about the newer alloy 85's, but if it's steel frame like mine, it loves +P ammunition.

I never could figure out why Taurus would port a .38special. Especially if it were steel framed.

Thanks Snowdog. My gun has a steel frame also. I guess the gun had to be manufactured before 1997. That is when Taurus started the internal security system. I did get a good deal on it!:D

You'll get a lifetime of service from that snubbie. I lost count of all the standard pressure rounds I've put through my M85CH, but quite a few for sure.
I can say with relative confidence that it's seen well over 500 rounds of 125gr and 158gr +Ps. She's still as good as new.
The only trouble I've had is with cheap 158gr LRN ammunition. The bullets would back out of their cases during recoil and bind the action. Certainly can't blame the Taurus.

One of the best aspects of my M85 is how well it likes my favored carry load, the 158gr LSWCHP+P.

I believe the Taurus M85 continues to be one of the best values in the snubbie market today.

Thanks again! I am glad to see another who likes the Taurus line. I have seen a lot of negative comments regarding Taurus products.:( I can't wait to fire some more rounds through it!:D :D :D :D

I have an 85 and I love it. As far as I know, Taurus says not to use +P, but I have yet to run into anyone who has had a problem with it.

Mine is a later model with the integral safety. It will shoot jacketed +P but not lead. If there is a question about your particular revolver Taurus has a phone number published in the product description and instruction booklet, but I don't have it with me offhand. :)

Thanks for all of the answers. I have one other question: I took the grips off & they are Uncle Mikes. I am wondering if this gun is used. I wouldn't think Taurus would put this type of grip on it being new although it is an older custom.

I like my 85 also except for the POA being 5" to the right at 35',in my manual it states that use of +P ammo will shorten the service life of the firearm but does not say not to use it,mine was made in 2001.
