Taurus 66 vs 608 vs 627

I am going to purchase either a Taurus 66,608, or 627 in 6". All of these guns have pros and cons. What do you guys think?

what're you going to use it for?

I have a 608. I found one of the earlier ones that have a 3 inch barrel and thought it'd be a pretty good CCW. Nope. Way too heavy and it's actually a bit larger in spots than an N frame Smith. After market grips have been extremely hard to find, also.

The gun shoots great, though, and the trigger pull is better than a couple of Rugers I have.

The gun would be used for many purposes: plinking, target shooting, CCW, and maybe a little bit of hunting. To me, barrel length would be the least of your problems in concealing a revolver (In my philosiphy, it's more about the bulk of the rest of the gun). Maybe a 627 would be suitable for these purposes? But the 627's compact frame may take a beating upon consistent usage. Maybe a 66 would be better suited? Is anyone here an expert on frame size and what repercussions it has on durability, accuracy, etc?

66 vs 627

the 66 weighs much more than the 627 when set up the same (barrel lengh and caliber), this fact alone for ccw, won me over on the 627 .357

An older 66

This is my first post, and this seemed like a good place for it.

I can't speak to a comparison of the guns because I not familiar with the 608 or the 627. I have a 66 with a 6 inch barrel. It's ten years old, with wood grips. I've had it for two months now, and I've very pleased with it. It's a fairly heavy piece and doesn't lend itself to ccw, but I only use it at the range. I'll typically fire 150 rounds each visit, and it's very comfortable to shoot. I shoot quickly, and the barrel will get quite hot, but it's heavy, and there's not much reduction in accuracy.

It's a very well made gun.

Go with the 608...

I have a 4" 608

I had it tuned earlier this year. I had it machined for moon clips and had the trigger worked on. $200 in work after purchase of the gun...

I had the 66, but, I wanted a heavier gun for my hands.

The 608 and 627 have 1 really nasty drawback...they are ported and shooting non-jacketed bullets is a no-no. (unless you like cleaning the outside more than the inside)

I shoot plated bullets in my 608, so, cleanup is alot easier.

And having 8rds vs 6 or 7 is a something to brag about.

Hey 100W,

Funny thing about the 608. They've made a bunch of changes since they first came out. I think mine was made '99 (Taurus web page date search) and as you can see (with a little NEF .32):

Mine's got the 3 inch barrel. They don't make it anymore.

Mine's got no porting at all. Don't make it like that anymore.

Mine's got fixed sights. Same as above...

I think the problems I've had with grips is that a few that I've found say they don't fit my model because I have an ALPHA prefix on the serial number. So, I'm stuck with the factory ones for now...

Funny how they made so many little changes over the years, huh?

Model 608?

Omega,

Yours is a 608? Doesn't sound right.

The 608 is a ported 8shot 357 build on the N frame from Taurus.

Yours looks more like a snub nose 6shot 66 than a 608.
(but, if you say Taurus changed the product, I will not argue)

I love the way the Hogue grips on my 608 feel as well as its weight.

Perfect is all I can say. (I would have liked and 8shot S&W, but, they only have it in 5", and they want $800 or more for it...)

That sounds quite familiar. I have an older 66 6-shot (the new ones are 7-shot) model. 6" barrel, wooden grips. While it could use a trigger job it's a nice range gun nonetheless. Not sure of its exact age as the Taurus serial # lookup isn't working today. It's not perfect, but for $170 used I picked up quite a nice little shooter.

I've never fired the 627 or the 608, only held them, but as others have said they're different beasts. The 627, 66, and 608 are all build on different frames with the 627 being the smallest, then the 66, and the 608 built on the same frame they use for their .44 magnum revolvers. I have to say that of the three the 627 is the only one I'd bother trying to CCW. The 66 would be a bit difficult and the 608 quite impractical.

They used to make it without the porting. I almost bought one on a whim. I really don't understand the concept of porting a .357 built on such a large frame anyway.

Hey 100W,

This might clear it up a bit... :D

Yeah, it's built on the N frame- might even be a tad larger because some N frame holsters I have don't fit it just right. Mine is the only one I've ever seen with all the specifications I listed above, though. Might have been a short lived idea. Cool, huh?

I'm curious...is the trigger and hammer case hardened on yours? I can't tell from the pic.

mine is stainless

i had my trigger polished and it is stainless.

Porting helps with really hot loads on muzzle flip, but that is all.

The smith who did my work will also take an 8" and chop it down to whatever length you want.
