Taurus 608

Anyone cares to comment on the Taurus model 608? Thanks. 8 rounds of .357 magnum in a good old wheel gun. Yes, 44 oz empty and not easy to find a holster for it. Sure looks like able to drive the devil out of the BG. But concealed carry? ;)

I had one several years ago. Pretty good gun. A little large for concealed carrry, but with the right holster and apparell, I suppose it can be done.

Mind explaining?

ojibweindian, would you mind kindly giving some more details as to suitable holster, etc.? Thanks. And thanks for your reassuring comment about the 608.

I might have Gander mountain order me one...how much did you find one for? Just looking for a fair price range. Thanks!

608 price

defjon, if you're talking about the gun, I bought mine brand new for $375. Never went to the range with it and not had admiring comments.

Benzene,
You may be better served with this.

It's the 608's little brother, 605.
It chambers the same ammo and is a little easier to hide!!!

As for holsters, I carry it in this: Bianchi Black Widow.

Generally, any holster for the J-frame Smith will fit it.
That, and a couple of speedloaders should hook ya up with a pretty good carry gun!! :D

Benzene,
I bought one 2 or 3 years ago with less than 50 rounds through it for $200. It's a pretty good shooter but I'm not wild about the porting on it. I have a couple friends with them and they like them alot.
The eight shots is nice but speedloaders are hard to find, I think Dillons had some awhile back. I've heard stories about them getting out of time but none of us has had a problem so far.
I like a Bianchi Cyclone holster for this and other N-framed guns. Also Bianchi X-15 shoulder holster is handy for field carry, I've never tried CCW carry with it though.
I do use a Haugen Leather Big Magnum Carry pancake style holser for my 629 in 3 inch for CCW at times. Heavy but with a proper belt I can carry it all day under a light jacket no problem.

Although I owned a 608, I never used it for concealed carry. It was strictly a range and home defense piece, so I can't tell you what would be a suitable holster. I would hazard to guess a holster meant for an N frame S&W should be okay.

To be able to ccw the 608, in addtion to the above, you would need to have some pretty loose-fitting shirts and a good belt for warm weather months. A jacket would work fine for winter months.

Another thing I'd like to mention about my old 608 is that is was really fond of 158 gr loads. 2" at 25 - 30 yards. 125 gr loads were around 4" or more.

Appreciated

Your comments are greatly appreciated. I actually do have a S&W 686 P and a S&W 342 PD, along with some others. But I really like the 608 for some strange reason. I might take a serious look at the recommended 605. I'll also definitely experiment with the 158 gr rounds. Thanks all. :)

Benzene,
The 605's sights are regulated for the 158gr .357mag round.

One thing though. I understand that Taurus has taken to outfitting the newer 605's with the same stocks as the M85!! They started doing this with the 2004 production models! My 605, purchased in 2003, was the last year to have the longer grip!!

If you have a 686P, then you have your CCW piece.

Also, if you want to get the 608, I'd get the 6.5" barrel. That would make a great pin gun.

The 6.5" 608 is my pin gun of choice. I use .38spcl 148gr Hornady LHBWC in it over 3.5gr. Unique. No recoil and atrigger that gets slicker with use. I can clear a table in 3.5sec. Not great, but I hope to improve that this year.
