Taurus 608 problems...

I just bought a Taurus 608 at the Houston gunshow this afternoon. I rushed out to go try it out before the sun went down only to find that it is shooting low. Real low. At 7 yards it is blowing the bottoms off my targets. It was still grouping great, just at the bottom way outside of any of the rings.

I figure, no big deal, adjustable sights. Couldn't find anything in my truck to adjust the sights with, so I packed it up and headed home. Problem is the rear sight is already adjusted already bottomed out...

Basically, some QA (laugh) guy at Taurus was sighting in my gun, found that he bottomed out the adj. sights and was still hitting low, and shipped it off anyways. I used to be a Taurus defender, but now I don't know.

Can anybody think of anything I could try other then sending it off to the factory? I thought I might could file down the front sight post, but I don't know how much I would need to do in order to bring it back in line and I don't want to void the warranty.

It wasn't entirely negative, though. The trigger is quite nice (head and shoulders above my gp100) the porting helps a lot with the recoil, it locks up so tight you could swear the cylinder was welded to the frame, and 8 shots of .357 magnum is a thing of beauty. Kind of wishing I would have paid the extra $100 or so for the S&W 686 plus sitting next to it...

Never mind, I got front and rear sight movement mixed up. The rear sight needed to go up to make the POI go up. Silly me.:o

Before you guys go laughing at me, just remember, if it weren't for ignorant SOBs like myself, none of you would seem that smart.
:p

Thumbs up to the Taurus 608 then. A full range report and pics forthcoming as soon as I pull my head out of my...

I'm not laughing at you, I was trying to imagine which way the sight was supposed to go and thinking hmmmm, hmmmm, maybe go up.

Happy shooting.

I was gonna tell ya you were trying to adjust the sight the wrong way :D .... but saw your second post.

Still wish you dropped an extra 100 bones on the S&W ? ;)

Yeah, I guess I am just used to sighting in my AKs, didn't think that adjusting the rear sight would work different then the front sight.

As to weather or not I wish I got the s&w, it is too early to tell for sure, but so far I am very happy with my choice. :)

Good choice on the gun. A few of us on this board are pretty staunch supporters of the 608. I have enough faith in mine to use it as the bedside gun...

Don't feel bad, I did that once with 12 ga. sabot slugs at a couple bucks a shot til I figured it out.

I've had a 608 for a number of years and like it alot even if I haven't shot it tons.
I have a few S&W N frames in several calibers and the 608 holds it own pretty well for half the price.
I wouldn't even compare it to an L frame myself as it's a different animal. I have 3 N frames and my new to me 686 plus snubbie might be the cat's pj's, they're much more S&W K frame size and grips as your 608 is akin a much larger N frame.
Try a S&W M-27, 28 or better yet a 57 in .41 mag to compare to your 608. The 608's are certainly under rated, looked down upon and claimed to have timing problems from the eight cylinders. I personally don't see a need for porting in a heavy .357 and have seen better triggers box stock from S&W but wouldn't be trading mine off soon due to the naysayers about.
Mine likes to live far left from it's S&W brethern in the safe but so does the Tracker .17 in my rimfire guns but that's another story.:)
Enjoy it and don't worry too much about we on the internet have to say about guns. Far as any of you know I might be a good researcher and have not a rubber band gun to my name.:)
