Taurus 605 ...357 / 38 SS Comments Please

I lusted over one until I saw the 617. For a house gun where some flexibility on size is available, why not get 7 shots instead of 5?

The 605 is a good looking 2" snubbie. For a house gun though, you might want to consider something with a 3" or 4" barrel. A slightly longer barrel will also give better performance with 38's. Personally, I wouldn't care for the flash and boom of a 2" 357 in a HD situation.

Taurus 605

Nothing wrong with a Taurus 605, that is unless you think the barrel is too short. Take a look at the 3" model 85. Yes, they still catalog it in either blue or stainless -- and it is unported! It 'only' comes in .38 though. I have one and love it.

Now why don't they put that 3" tube on the 605?

If you go anything bigger, say a six or seven shot, then you're better off going with a 4" barrel. The balance is better that way. The problem then is that the gun is getting a bit unweildy.

My 'always gun' (the one in my bedside quick-access GunVault) is the 3" Taurus 85.

Actually, I've owned several mod 605's at one point or another. All good revolvers but I use mine as stash away guns or concealment pieces. I'd use a 4" revolver with 6 or 7 shots for home defense. Just my thoughts, J. Parker

Right now I CAN NOT recomend a Taurus 605.

I have one, took it to the range and was very happy with the way it shot. I kept it loaded as my house gun.

Then I took it to the range again and it's light striking causeing failure to fire.

Same thing just happened with my 2 month old Ruger SP101 stainless 4 inch barrel. It's on it's way back to the factory. The firing pin looks like it's been hammered on both ends. The cylinder on my 3 month old Ruger SP101 stainless 6 inch barrel is starting to bind in two chamber positions. I guess they can't take too many rounds loaded with 3 grains of WIN 231.:) My 4 month old Taurus 605 is still going. Those Taurus's are looking better and better.

Hogue Grips on 605

I bought a 605 (haven't shot it yet) but already I'm thinking about Hogue grips they are soft robber with a round butt and palm swell has anyone replaced their original grips with Hogue's

Thank You
Greyhound Dog

Have I mentioned yet that I like Taurus revolvers , and that I have already used my custom M605 to convince two gang punks, that were sizing me up for a robbery to leave me alone????
Do the right thing, and buy the Taurus.

Said M605 has 1) ported barrel, 2) red inserts on the front sight 3) custom rosewood boot grips, 4) trigger job. It is a great little revolver, and I should carry it more often than I do.

red inserts for 605

denfoote I'm new to the forum just joined today . I see you said you have a red insert on your 605. Where did you get it & is it too small to see. I think that would be of great help alighning the sight on target. Thanks for any help you can give . Oh & by the way I just put a 605SS2 on lay away Thursday . great feeling lil protector .

I've been thru a lot with my 605

The 605 was the first gun I purchased. I thought it would be a good size for either home defense, or later on if I wanted to conceal carry. It is accurate beyond 20ft, so it fits the bill there no problem. I have the regular hammer stainless model, non ported, flat finish. I didn't care for the boot grip, so I ordered the taurus combat grip direct from miami. I may put the boot back on for carry, but right now the combat grip is far superior to it, and I recommend you go that way. It's cheap and also covers the back of the grip. This is important if you're going to shoot magnums. I don't like shooting magnums out of this gun . They beat up your hand too much and make lots of noise. Hand held flame thrower comes to mind. Easy to clean as well with a good trigger pull.
Now, problems. Light strikes became a problem for me with this gun after about 600 rounds. I went back to the shop where I purchased it. The smith is authorized to do warranty work for taurus. He told me taurus uses a very light hammer spring to get that sweet trigger pull. He removed the 8lb spring, and installed a standard 12lb spring. Not one light strike since with nice deep dimples on all types of ammo. If you experience this, don't get upset, just change the spring. Cylinder binding has been a problem with cheap dirty target ammo after about 30 rounds, but not quality ammo. You need to keep this gun clean.
Ammo: I've tried 11 different types of defense ammo in this gun for accuracy, recoil, and reliability. I shoot 38's, so a lot of stuff happens in the chamber before it reaches the forcing cone. Long slugs work better than short ones. For instance the Winchester super x hollowpoints wouldn't shoot worth a darn, whereas the PMC Starfire Eldorado seems to work the best(nice long slug and soft recoil) I'm sure the Remington gold sabres would do well also. Winchester White box works best for target ammo. 130 grain works best. The heavier slugs kick more, and are hard on the hand.
To sum up, even with all the teething troubles, I would buy it again in a heart beat. The fit and finish is very good and very smooth. And it's a beautiful gun to look at. :D

That post is 4 years old!!

I don't have that gun any more!!

I traded it for something, I can't remember for what any more!!!

Point is, soon after, the invertible regret set in, and I had to have another!!!

I was finally able to get one about a year ago. It is currently stock.

As to your question. The only mod I plan to get back is the red insert!! It made the front sight more visible!!

The porting turned out to be useless!! All it did was blind me during night firing!!

The rosewood grips came off about two minutes after I got back from the range, after tearing the webbing on my hand from the recoil!!!

I bought one for my 81 year old father, took him to the range, the old boy keeps 5 rounds in an 8" circle at 7 yds shooting DA, ( using 38 specials, which I have him using for self defense also) the 357 were just a little to perky for him.

I have had my 605 for two years and love it. The grips may be a little on the small side, but it's nothing that can't be overcome with practice.

For HD, I would use Winchester .357 145gr Silver HP or Federal 158 gr Hydra-Shok. The only misfires I have experienced with this gun came from hand loads. Factory ammo has fired every time.

Oh yeah, don't make the mistake of having it ported. Porting doesn't help on this gun! My 605 is ported and my dad's 650 isn't. Recoil is the same on both.

You must have one of the newer models with the small grips!!
Both mine came full length stocks that are quite comfortable, even with shooting magnums!!

I've had hundreds of rounds through my 605, mostly .38 +p with a few .357's mixed in for good measure, and I think it's a great little self defense gun. I'd recommend it to anyone for that purpose.

For home defense, though ... I agree that a revolver with more capacity and a couple more inches of barrel would be better. Why not? Shoot better, too, because the 605 is relatively light when compared to an S&W with a 4" barrel. And if you can get 6 or 7 rounds instead of 5, so much the better.

In terms of grips ...

The screw on the original small grip on mine stripped out right away. I wanted a different grip, so I bought a Hogue on Ebay. It's really comfortable, makes the gun easier to shoot, liked it a lot.

Then on Ebay I discovered a wooden grip on sale. So ... the ONLY reason I went to the wooden grip was that when I carry concealed (which is what this weapon is for) the slick wood grip doesn't catch on my clothing. But I can still get a good grip on it.

Just shot it with .357's this last weekend, and the wood grip was no problem.

Hogue is my favorite grip for shooting, but the wooden grip is better for carrying in a smart carry like I do.

My .02 ...

I have a 605 that I bought several years ago for concealed carry. I had the hammer bobbed, and have put many rounds through it with no problems. I usually shoot 38s through it at the range.
