Taurus 44 Tracker

I have waited to buy the GP-100 in 44 spec.but have begun to wonder if the Taurus Tracker in 44 might save some money and sit well between the light weight of the CA Bulldog and the much desired GP-100.Any experience with or opinions about?

Don't forget the Taurus M44. It's the 6 round large frame Taurus.

Trackers have a smaller frame, which you have already noted causes the light weight.

I personally prefer the M series (M66 and M44) to the Tracker line. Just better looking, one more round, bigger frames, more established Taurus item, etc.

I had a Taurus Tracker and really liked the gun. I didn't like the ported barrel. I bought the gun to carry on a snake infested deer lease with rat shot loads. The instructions said not to shoot shot loads because of the ported barrel. I should have tried a couple of shot loads just to see but I didn't. Oh well. And I never saw a single rattlesnake or any other snake the whole time I was on that lease.

The gun itself worked perfectly. The crane area looked too small for a 44 mag gun. It was about the same size as a K-Frame S&W revolver. I shot a few full power loads and they were stiff in that light weight gun. So I mostly shot 44 Special style loads and a load that would be a hot Special or bottom end mag load with a 240gr lead bullet around 1000fps. That was good enough for me.

The gun was easy to carry because of the light weight. I wish I still had it. I have thought about getting another one but now the prices sorta killed that idea. When I got mine it was just over $400. I don't want another bad enough to pay $500+ for it.

My daughter had a 5 shot , 44 special , snub nose Taurus , 445 I believe was the model.
Fired it several times, liked it and got myself one but in 45 acp in 2004 , I have been reloading 45 acp since 1968 and all set up for that round. so took the 45 acp the dealer had in stock model 455 . No reload 44 Special.
My daughter had to use her's to stop an armed robber from executing all of the people in her place of business....when he said "face the wall and kneel down" she knew he wasn't just going to leave with the cash box...after all the trials and appeals a few years passed and the 44 special couldn't be located...Sorry about that she was told .
I still have my 455 and love it...it's the most accurate 45 acp I own...shoots one hole groups like it was possesed with magic . No trouble, no problems ...love it !

I think Ruger should have tried to squeeze the 44mag in the GP100 ... S&W has the M69 a 44mag built on their L frame ... Which pretty much ices the GP100 ...
Id lean toward the GP100 in 10mm over the GP100 in 44spl..

As for the Tracker ... It is built on the Taurus "Compact" frame ... Which is a wee bit smaller than the S&W Medium frame ....
Which is a great factory 44mag ammo .. You have to watch the cartridge OAL ... I wouldn't run any stout heavy loads ... But honestly.. It makes a great 44spl revolver with the 44mag option.... The Tracker is much lighter than the GP100 ...

Myself ... I like the Charter 5 shot 44spl with a 2.5 inch barrel and weighs 21 oz ...

And Charter makes a 45acp ,45 Colt & 41Mag
