Taurus .44 Special Goodness

My new to me Taurus 4", model 441, .44 S&W Special :) It was made in 1994 according to Taurus and I got it with box and papers. It was 100% blue and did not look fired at all. It's not a S&W but still a real looker.

Just took it out to the range today and it was the most fun shooting that I've had in a while. .44spl Ammo is not cheap though.

Very cool. I actually worked for a gunshop in the 90s and we sold a lot of Taurus' but we couldn't seem to ever get that model in. If you really love shooting the .44 Spl. (and I know you do) you must take up handloading. You will be able to find and load the perfect ammo for your gun and shoot lots more of it for the same money (or less) you are paying for factory ammo. I am a total .44 Spl. junkie. I believe it is one of America's greatest cartridges.

Nice revolver. Nice pics.

That's another fine handgun I should've bought when they were $300 brand new.. I prefer the stainless versions, but Taurus' blue holds up fairly well

That is a very good looking big bore special. Definately classic looking and rwally like the grain on those grips. Never paid much mind to Taurus' bigger revolvers but maybe I need to.

Any 90's Taurus revolvers are pretty good, they did great jobs on the bluing back then. Now its poor'er made. Shame.. :( I would love to find a 90's revolver from Taurus, but they hard to come by.

How much did you pay? I found some 85-95% for $350-$400

I ended up paying $400 for it. It may be alittle high, but I have been dwelling on purchasing it for five weeks from the LGS. I really believe it had not been fired before I purchased it. The old tag on the box has it priced at $199.99 back in the 90's.

$400 is not bad IMO for that gun. It may not be a S&W but when I sold Taurus' in the 90s we had very few unhappy customers or defective guns from Taurus. Perhaps that is not the case now. I think you got a really nice .44 Spl. there. I love the way they radiused the trigger. Ruger could take a lesson from them. The best factory load will be the CCI/Speer 200 gr. Gold Dot. Try some. Don't waste your money on CorBon or Buffalo Bore +P stuff.

I really wish Ruger would make a 44 in a GP style gun, why did they have to make a dumb 357 again in some "kit gun" after the sp 101 22lr.

Make it blue 3" really nice..

Is there a internal lock on this?

No internal lock or lock on the hammer on this vintage. I don't mind the lock on the new Taurus to much. It is an inset screw in the hammer and does not add a mechanism of parts like on the S&W.

After owning this Taurus, I think I might have to take a chance on a newer one such as a 608 or 66 and a 22lr 990 tracker.

Captain H, how's the double/single action trigger pull?

My 1995 Model 44 (.44 Mag) stages nicely from chamber to chamber in DA, and the single-action pull is very light, and breaks clean without any creep.

It is actually not very difficult to get a Taurus trigger to break just like a S&W. The owner of the shop I worked at had me slick up a small Taurus .357 for his wife to carry. It had a GREAT trigger on it after a little work. She could have any kind of revolver she wanted and she wanted THAT one. Everyone at our range that shot it wanted to buy it. I don't think they are as bad as many people make them out to be. Yes, they have some rough parts in them but they can usually be replaced or smoothed up. We also sold S&W but you would get a lot of customers that simply don't want to/ or can't afford to shell out the price of a S&W. Taurus is not bad for the price they charge.

S&W and Taurus sell for the same price here (J frames)

$350-$400 for either a S&W or Taurus J frame. But you can buy the 357 Taurus J frame for like $430 over Smiths $650-$700 one...

If you are looking at 357 magnums K frame etc... Yeah $800 for a S&W or Taurus $500.

Beautifull piece. The prices on these have crept up and deservedly so.I like mine a lot and am always looking for another. I have a couple more since the family portrait here. They grow up so fast.lol

The trigger pull in SA is very crisp and about 3 lbs. DA is pretty smooth. Comparing it to my wifes S&W mod 10-5, it is not as smooth but not bad by any means. What I mean by smooth is, with the S&W, you dont feel any mechanical things happening while pulling DA where as the Taurus has just a bit of it. Same weight of pull though.

Great looking piece! It's nice to have a slick and light trigger pull.

Recoil is mild, but those 200-240gr. bullets thump things pretty well.

There is something comforting about that ol' big slug that is comforting.

Got a couple of the 6 inch ones.

Back in the '90s, I wanted to get a 4" Rossi 720 or Taurus .44 Special; I ended up getting a Taurus Model 443 snubbie for a price I could not refuse. I still want a 4" one..

That is a very nice revolver. If Smith or Ruger would make something comparable (K-frame in .44 spl) I think they would sell.
