Taurus 22 mainspring?

Has anyone lightened up on the mainspring in their Taurus 94 or 941? I believe the factory spring is 12lbs and wolff makes them down to 9lbs. The heavy DA trigger is my only complaint with this gun.

I have the same problem with my Taurus 94. I have not tried to change anything on the gun yet so I can't really be of any help, sorry. Let me know what you decide to do and how it works out for you.

Well I ordered the Wolff Shooters Pack for the Taurus small frame revolvers, we'll see how light the gun will go in a week or two.

I don't own one, but I've been shooting my dad's M94 extensively for a few months. I have trouble getting reliable strikes even with the stock spring, but only during extended firing sessions (over 200 rounds w/o cleaning). Personally, I wouldn't mess with it unless you typically shoot 50 or less rounds per session.

My 94 will fire through 300 rounds without problems with the stock springs, that's all I've tried without cleaning. The lighter spring would not fire the first shot in a clean gun in DA. It fired the majority of rounds SA, but did fail to give good primer hits on a few rounds. The rounds were not the problem, I took the ones in question and fired them in another gun. The stock spring is back in. I will try the lighter spring in a center fire Model 85 if I ever get one:)

I have a model 96 and I tried adjusting the spring tension without success. The trigger was lighter, but reliability was gone. I think a better route is to have the machining marks removed from the hammer hook and sear.

Whiskey, I've had the same experience you've had with a blued Taurus 94 I bought a couple years back. The Wolff spring will not provide reliable ignition - in fact it DOESN'T fire more often than it does!!. However my Taurus also feels like it needs the trigger cleaned up (kind of a gritty trigger pull). However I've also read that rimfire cartridges need a stronger primer strike than a centerfire cartridge, so I'm not sure the lighter spring Wolff spring will; even work in that case.

My trigger is nice. It is crisp in SA and not bad in DA. It is just heavy as hell in DA. The spring made the trigger light and smooth as butter, but...well you know. I am planning on polishing the insides a little more. I did do some light polishing and it helped, that dang spring is just too heavy. I have also heard that rimfires require a harder primer strike. Anyway, the trigger is not bad enough to not shoot. So I will try to fire it smooth:)

While we're discussing the M94, does anyone else have difficulty with extraction in a filthy gun? That little tiny star extractor on my dad's M94 tends to slip over 2-4 cases at a time. This only happens when the gun is filthy, but it also tends to happen when I'm reloading quickly with a firm fast push on the ejector rod. I'm used to pounding the ejector on a GP-100, so I'm wondering if this is just a case of me abusing this little weapon? It seems as if there is a little too much slop in the side to side movement of the ejector rod, but I don't know the weapon that well, so I hesistate to chalk it up to that.

The only extraction problems I have is with empties falling under the star after they leave the cylinder. They get stuck between in there and I have to fish them out. But all 9 lift well and make a full extraction. I just have to hold it upside down so the empties don't fall back under the star.

FYI: The factory spring is 11lbs. The replacement spring was 9lbs. Not much use in buying a 10lbs spring if the 9lbs didn't work. I guess I will keep the factory 11lbs.

The factory trigger spring was 12lbs. I replaces with the 6.5 lbs and the trigger was nicer.

Whiskey,

I've got 2 941's and a 94, all SS. The 2" 941 Ultralite is the only one I've had a desire to mess with - the trigger is HEAVY in DA:( ! Tried the Wolff hammer spring with the same results as yours, and binding of the cylinder to boot! Sent it back to Taurus sans the new hammer spring, and had same problem again! Back one more time, and now it has all the factory springs and goes bang every time - just not easily in DA. I haven't changed the trigger spring, but felt the hammer spring had more effect on the DA trigger pull anyway. Maybe I'll try the trigger spring route.

By the way, the 94 and other 9941 are a "matched pair" of 4" full underlug guns, and the triggers on both of them are MUCH better in DA than the 2" UL.

On another note for 94 or 941 owners looking for the right holster, well Triple K makes a nice leather holster that is great for woods carry. It has a thumb break and a slight foward cant. The holster comes in black or walnut oiled, in plain and basket weave. I just got one in for my model 94 and I am very happy with the light weight and good fit of this holster. The model that I got was the S&W J-frame for the 4" barrel, sku# 19341. At 40 bucks delivered, this is a great deal. Delivery was via Express mail and made it from CA to FL in 2 business days.

Taurus mainspring

I just picked up a model 941, S/S 5" BBL and tried it out yesterday. The DA trigger pull felt to be about sixty pounds and the single action maybe fifty five. I thought at first my hand must be going weak, until I tried a Dan Wesson model 15 I had brought along - real night and day difference. The 941 is a really handsome little gun; fit and finish are first rate. But the action is leaves much to be desired. I decided to leave it stored in the cocked position, for maybe a few weeks, to try taming the mainspring a little. I was also thinking of sending off for one of the various spring reduction kits until I read the posts. Any chance the firing pin return spring could be causing the misfires with the lighter mainsprings? Also, the progressive coil springs might be useful? Just a thought. Thanks for the info. By the way, has anyone used the action polishing compound listed in Brownell's to help smooth up the 941?
