Target shooting

I've been noticing something. When I shoot at targets off my porch to test rounds I usually shoot standing with both hands about 10-15 yards to test for groupings. But yesterday I heard others say to use a bench or whatever. So I used my rail around the porch and can't hit crap, pattern goes to about 6-8". But then I stand and shoot offhand again and things really tighten up. Seems like using a brace would really help but far from it. For me anyway. Any ideas as to why ?

Rifle or pistol?

Are you setting the barrel on the rail? Don't do that.

Rifle -You should set a sandbag on the rail, then your hand, and then the forearm of the rifle.

Pistol- Assume your normal two handed grip (I use thumbs forward Weaver) and set your support hand on the rest/sandbag.

How are you resting the rifle on the rail, on the fore-end of the stock or the barrel? If on the barrel that could explain the poor groups, the barrel should not be in contact with anything during the firing.

Also, what is your shooting position when shooting off the rail? Comfortable and steady or 'hunkered over and awkward'? If the latter that could be a factor too.

Not a rifle, its a pistol (Glock model 22). I was holding it with my wrist on the rail but got real crappy results. Shooting standing I do great.

It's your technique.
But why bother with using a support, unless it's just to test the gun?
Shooting well, especially with handguns, is a combination of gun and shooter.

thats all I was trying to do is test a few different handloads. Well it doesnt work for me. Ill keep doing what Ive been doing the last 40 something years.
