Target Question

Point Blank

I bought some targets that have a 1" square box above the 3" bullseye, what is the square box there for?? Thanks for any reply..

Sounds like a benchrest target. Mostly, the square is used for an aiming point, with the scope adjusted to put the shots into the "mothball", the center ring. That way, I'm told, the aiming point is not destroyed by the holes, and a precise spot can be held...? ;)

BOUGHT targets? I haven't bought targets in quite a while, since I got a printer, I just found some targets (I think at ammoman.com) and just print some out. saves a little $$!

I learn REAL quick that you dont want to piss off your wife, especially if she's a "biggin", and country raised on cornbread + beans.I downloaded some nice perrty colored ones long time back and wore her $50 cartridge slap out, then tried to conceal the fact. "Baby" stumbled upon the last few faded ones i had hid one day and i thought my time on this earth was about to expire. Ever since that day i would rather pay then play with babies $50 cartridges!!!

I thought serious benchresters actually used the bullet holes as a target, i.e., they "chase" the bullet holes, wherever they happen to be landing, rather than holding at a fixed point on the target.

How I do it...

I'll fire several shots at the sighter - Make sure I'm not going to get a flyer out of a just cleaned barrel. Are the shots going in the same spot? Is the wind consistent?

I'll move up to the record target. I'll hold at the same spot on the record that I was holding at on the sighter. Is the wind the same? Bang! Did it go in the expected spot? Is the wind the same? If so, repeat for four more shots... Since I'm shooting to have the impact slightly to the side of the mothball, I don't chase the impact - just the mothball. I'll hold to one side or the other of the mothball depending on wind velocity.

If not, back down to the sighter target, and see what's going on... Did I miss a switch in the wind? Did I shoulder the rifle wrong? What caused the shot to go in an unintended direction? Figure that out, go back up to the record, correct however much hold off is necessary, or wait for the "off" wind condition to return, and then start the trigger action...

What swifter said, it's a benchrest target. Aim for the 3" bull. Adjust your scope so the bullets land in the center of the box. -- Kernel

Why? You can't see the hits if the bullets hit on the heavy box lines... The box came into being when people were using older, not quite as good, scopes during the starting days of BR shooting. It's still used as an aiming point in the event of heavy mirage. Other than that, it just sits there. In BR, as long as your shots are on paper, you're fine.
