Tapered Cone or Bull Barrel, any good?

I was at the gun shop a couple of days ago and was looking at two 1911 compacts with bushingless barrels. One was a kimber with a "bull" barrel and the other was a Wilson Combat with a "Tapered Cone" barrel. Both these barrels are 4" bushingless. What's the story on barrels like these? Are they accurate? How about durability? Will the fit ware out sooner then a standard 5" barrel with a bushing? Any other info.? Thanks. Stay Safe, Sam

Many of the top line competition pistols use a cone type tube. STI and SV come to mind immediately. I have a Springfield Ultra-Compact V-10 and is not very accurate. I guess it is tough to judge cone type tubes in general from experiences with the compact models.

My Kimber ProCarry has a bull barrel with no bushing. It is as accurate as my 5" Govt Wilson Combat, and the recoil is LESS because of the added weight up front. I love this gun!

Sam: I have a Kimber Gold Match and a Kimber Compact. I was surprised to find that the felt recoil on the compact seems less ? weight up front? It is also just as accurate in my hands.
All the best,
Bill Daniel

I have a tapered cone/flanged Kart barrel in my Caspian Officer's ACP, and it's been a sweetheart, tight, accurate lockup, and it does seem to have lower recoil than a Colt Officer's ACP with bushing setup...

Have a tapered cone compensator and a tapered cone bushing for my Commander. Tight lock and lots of durability. Shoots like a dream with either.

Is their a difference between a "Bull" barrel and a "Tapered Cone" barrel in terms of accuracy and reliability? Stay Safe, Sam

My tapered cone Kimber Ultra Elite is seemingly just as accurate as any other .45, although the short sight radius does make sighting a little more challenging for bullseye shooting. As for combat-type shooting accuracy, I have no qualms about the barrel.

I was reading the magazine report on the HS2000 yesterday and it mentioned the barrel being larger at the muzzle end for better accuracy?? The Ruger P97 is also made this way. The barrels are not tapered but just larger. On a pistol with no bushing how can this increase accuracy? Someone please enlighten me.

I saw on the Wilson Combat site a 5" gun with a "Tapered Cone" barrel. I think it was called the "Tactical Elite" If these barrels are so good for a defensive pistol, why don't we see more manfuctures offering them? Stay safe, Sam

Sam C,

Yes, they are accurate, reliable and durable. With manufacturers like Wilson and Kimber, you can rely on their efficacy.
